Like many of you I'm not too thrilled with the song selections on the upcoming rarities CD. So with the aid of this informative website [www.timeisonourside.com] I am attempting to assemble a track list for a better rarities collection, one I will burn myself.

I'm going to start with a CD encompassing every studio track released since 1970 that is not on a studio album. Live stuff like Let It Rock can wait for the next disc. Remixes will also be yet another CD.

Here's what I have, please let me know of mistakes, things I've left out, etc.

The 25 tunes listed in the original post would be a fantastic "Rarities" CD.

However one must make several purchases to get all of the songs listed. The Stones want it this way.

Seriously, look at how many fans bought 40 Licks for 4 new songs. Look how many will buy the Special Edition ABB for 2 new songs. Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if there were still yet ANOTHER edition of ABB following the "Special Edition" to go on sale at the beginning of the European tour.

It's also funny how some will not buy Rarities when it will come out but will have no problem paying/donating $5+ for one song........Hurricane.

Hopefully we will be able to see more "Stripped" type compilations available in the near future.

Saw A Bigger Bang in stores today for only 9,99 euro, which it already was in the second week here in Holland (Van Leest, Mediamarkt)so the Rarities album, which won't sell as much as ABB, will hopefully follow the same path shortly after being released.

Why didn't they wait untill the tour hits Europe and media attention is secured? That would have been a better release date?

Well, everybody will prefer his or her own individual tracklist for a Rarities release - and the Stones for sure do not want to hear that their tracklist decision is wrong. But it must be said that the ommitance of a couple of tracks is nothing less than a crime: Think I'm Going Mad comes to mind, but also later tracks such as The Storm, So Young, Jump On Top Of Me, Honest I Do (Stripped remake) - and although labelled as solo tracks, I prefer Run Rudolph Run and The Harder They Come by Keith over the lame Thru And Thru (live) any day.

An impressive tracklisting. I don't understand why Highwire + Sexdrive is there though.

Anyway, you are missing 2 tracks:

Criss Cross Man (on Japanese soundtrack Metamorphosis, 1973)

Long Black Veil (Stones with The Cheiftans, 1995)

Now that would be a good album. And, yes include Losing My Touch.

Must be a real big CD, hope it fits into my player. 25 songs...

Good call on those two. For that matter, I left out all the other Stones songs on Metamorphosis as well, including Memo From Turner as ssprings pointed out. (Of course, some of the songs on Metamorphosis are not actually Stones tunes, they are just Jagger with the Andrew Loog Oldham Orchestra.) And as georgelicks pointed out I left out Exile On Main Street Blues.

not sure why the guest appearance the BB King album makes the cut, but if that's the case, what about the Mick/Keith appearances (3 songs) on Jimmy Rogers final album?

That's a good question, and the same could apply to the Chieftians song The Long Black Veil. I think that in both cases the song is credited on the album as B.B. King (or the Chieftians) and the Rolling Stones, and all four Stones play on it. On the Jimmy Rogers album it was just Mick and Keith and was credited to them, not the Stones. At least I'm pretty sure I have my facts right here - anyone know for sure?

Long Black Veil features just MJ I believe - there's another track at the end of the album that credits the whole RS band -

yep - that's the one - it's not really something a lot of Stones fans would dig - really just a romp through an Irish jig - if someone didn't tell you the Stones were playing on it you wouldn't likely be able to figure it out

to me including guest appearances on other people's albums - even if you go with just tracks where at least two Stones appear -
is opening the door to something more like a box set than a double album. just off the top of my head you'd want
~ I Can Feel the Fire and Am I Grooving You from Ronnie's first album
~ at least half of Pay Pack & Follow
~ Truly off Ian McLagan's first album
~ Willie & the Poor Boys
and if you were into concert tracks too, then there's
~ the 1974 Ron Wood & Band gigs,
~ the New Barbarians gigs,
~ Mick & Keith's set at the Concert for NYC
~ etc.
in other words: i'd leave guest appearances for another day and stick with straight Stones stuff.

i'd also leave off those Metamorphosis tracks, because (a) they're on Metamorphosis already, and
(b) except for I'm Going Down, they don't fit your stated timeframe (they were recorded in 1969 or earlier).
[discreet edit: ahem, right: your stated timeframe is *released* after 70. but still: the tracks are already assembled on a "rarities" disk of sorts ... ]

Good point, I think I will leave off guest appearances. I was trying to limit myself to only guest appearances that were credited to The Rolling Stones (and not just one or more indvidual members), but it is such a grey area that I'm now convinced you're right, guest appearances should be a whole 'nother collection.

Good point about Metamorphosis, too. It was released in '75 but recorded in the '60s, so I will leave those tracks off as well. But what about Memo From Turner? Was that recorded in '69 or '70? And when was Chris Cross Man recorded?

far as i know Memo was recorded in 68, and CrissCross in 72/73.
but does CrissCross qualify, if the compilation is supposed to be of *released* rarities?
bootlegs/outtakes seem like yet another box set, and a pretty massive one at that.

ps regarding the Metamorphosis tracks: I'm Going Down *does* sort of fit: it was started in 69 and completed in 70.
