How Can I Stop

Has anyone got a copy of the live version of this track from 1998 that they could post on yousendit.com? Or perhaps we could set up a trade.

Hi Valeswood:

I was at the 14 Jan. 1998 show at MSG and I have a recording of that night's "How Can I Stop?" (as well as one of the impromptu "Little Red Rooster" they did that night from the b-stage, when technical difficulties messed up whatever it was they had planned--"IORR?")

Both appear on a 1997-98 rarities comp. entitled "You Get The Best of Me"

I'll try to send along momentarily, but have never done this before...

This is a beautiful song although that horn solo kills it for me--makes me think of Kenny G. I know it's probably some jazz legend that plays it.

it's Wayne Shorter - an incredible saxist...ever hear of Weather Report or Miles Davis? yeah, he's a legend....and it's a beautiful solo on a wonderfully exquisite song.

Wow! I had no idea that Wayne Shorter did that solo. I'm a huge Wayne Shorter fan. Too coool.

Valeswood and llaushin:

Let me see what I can do about yousendit...very new to all this. I'll find a way to get "You Get The Best Of Me" out as it is two discs stocked with interesting/great tracks. (did you catch the meathead yelling "smash the f---ing guitar!" during the technical problems before "Rooster?" "Classic Newwwwww Yawwwwwwk Citaaaaaayy.")

Re: Wayne Shorter on the "Bridges" "How Can I Stop?"--breathtaking. That sax part just drifts in, then kind of clenches up and heads skyward. Finally, it drifts and sways back down to close out the album...I could not believe it when I heard it. A triumph for the Keith and the Stones. As much fun as "ABB" is, there's nothing on it to compete.

how can i stop is a thing that the stones maybe should not perform live, the beauty of the original version is a thing that you can't capture live

I'm sure it can be awesome if it were in a club or small setting.

I thought it was pretty awesome at Madison Square Garden. Very well done--especially for a one-off.

Interesting that Keith, Bernard and Lisa are seen rehearsing it at Boston in "Four Flicks." Was it ever used during the "Licks" tour?

no, it wasn't!
it would be nice in a club, but thay should rehearse it pretty well, and not rape the versions,

i think this song is keith richards shining hour as a writer/vocalist. i love the line 'i see your face, and i want to roll with itttttt'. if i ever played it for my woman she would probably think it's very romantic.

How Can I Stop did not work that well as Thief. I mean much of HCIS rides on the end part. I bet that whole part surprised even the Stones themselves; the power of it. It's not just the Sax solo, it is also Charlie at the very end. One trademeark of the Stones, especially Keith and Charlie is to never overdo endings. They never make these monumetal mountain deals out of endings like some bands do. When I heard HCIS the first time this was what suprised me most: that Charlie would make such a type statement.
