But there's the hang. They weren't writing pop songs by 1969. They were playing rock, rhythm and blues. They returned to an earthier sound. It should have been in Brian's wheel house. But he lost almost all interest in being with the Rolling Stones.

They started to dip their toes in the water of pop tunes with JJF. But that's probably why BJ started to lose interest.

Maybe Brian would have played the sax on Sugar and a slide guitar on Horses

If BS had sax part by Brian …..well if it sounded like the Beatles song. Some sick geese would of sounded better. He was terrible at it. I’m sorry He wasn’t even poor at best

I wonder if the four-piece Stones could have soldiered on when Brian was “missing in action” after a few shows into the 1969 US tour. A stretch? Well, that’s what happened to the Beck/Page-period Yardbirds that barely lasted six months. As Beck, the group’s star player, didn’t turn up at a gig often or left in mid-tour, Page took the sole role of playing the guitar, which eventually led to Beck’s leave from the band and the decision they would continue as a quartet. The formation worked somehow, and they lasted another one and a half years.

Yeah, they should have continued with the blues-based earthy material like "Ruby Tuesday", "She's A Rainbow", "Dandelion", "Yesterday's Papers" etc. No wonder Brian lost his interest..

Seriously, I don't think the reason why Brian lost his interest was the kind of material stylistically The Stones were doing/making at the time, but more like by whom it was lead by. BEGGARS BANQUET cemented the idea and progress that the Stones were a Mick and Keith show. Similarly during those sessions Bill lost his interest in offering the Stones songs and ideas (and later being even present in sessions always). The latter is described by him rather bitterly in STONE ALONE and it seemingly is pretty hard for Bill to give credit for Mick and Keith (and the band) for the doubtless masterpieces they made during the following years. Bill's 'golden years' were 1963-1967 probably peaking in "In Another Land".

Of course, something else happened for Brian during the BEGGARS sessions that had a terrible consequence for him to function properly (the second bust).

It could be a train wreck. Mick and Keith as the band leading force are as strong as ever which would make Brian more and more upset and resentful. I can see him either escape or sabotage band performance in some ways (I recall Stu was talking about it earlier). To cope with the fact he's not the winner here, he takes more and more drugs and becomes unbearable. Mick and Keith see he can't tour properly and end up saying, we should have taken that kid from John Mayall's, lets get his number again and stop this nightmare.
