OT: Bitchin': The Sound and Fury of Rick James

New documentary now in heavy rotation on the Showtime Network. I caught part of it last night. They had an interview with a member of the Mynah Birds, the short-lived mid-60s Motown band that featured a lineup including both Rick James and Neil Young.

One interesting little factoid of which I had not previously been aware: Several years after his stint in the Mynah Birds, James auditioned, unsuccessfully, to be the bass player in Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

While I did know about him with Neil in the Mynah Birds, never knew about the CSNY connection either,
but he went on to become succesfully Super Freaky...dude then went down in flames.... FREAKY

I haven't seen the film yet,

As a fan of his music who is aware of his significant popularity and influence I have to ask:

Why isn't Rick James in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame?

The Rock Hall seems to prioritize artists they consider to be influential over those who exhibit mere musical excellence. They probably consider Rick to have been more influenced by others (Clinton, Sly) rather than being an influence on others, although the film does try to make a convincing case that Prince was heavily influenced by RJ.

Another of the film's surprising revelations: Rick was a good friend of Jay Sebring's, and actually turned down an invitation to hang out with him on the night he and Sharon Tate were murdered by the Manson Family!

Hi Rockman smiling smiley Good to see all the familiar names here again -- all is well here -- and the world definitely is a-spinnin, isn't it? I thought of you the other day when I got the word about Lee Scratch Perry.
