Stones Influences

The Stones have provided many of us insight into different forms of music. I personally discovered blues and bluegrass through them (we played a lot of Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Louie Prima when I was a kid).

I would like to see if we can list at least 2 artists (other than Picasso) that influenced the Stones outside of the obvious Chuck, Muddy, Elmore, Tempations, Otis Redding, Hank Williams, and Jimmy Reed.

1) Bo Diddley

2) George jones

you didn't mention three other obvious ones - the Wolf, Bo and Fats

1. James Brown - big influence on Mick's stage movements.

2. Gram Parsons - educated them even more on country.

Both Georgia boys, I might add.

Little Richard---another Georgia boy. T&A---there are a lot of obvious ones but I am curious about those that aren't so obvious. I mean, where did they get they idea for High and Dry? There didn;t seem to be a lot of Bluegrass influence in their music before then.

I never knew George Jones had influenced Keith until recently. Fats is an interesting one. What about Hendrix? And of course Dylan.

"Mojo" did a piece about a year ago about Dylan's 1967 "Basement Tapes" that features Marianne Faithful's account of how much she and Jagger and Keith listened to the Dylan recordings.

That immersion was the direct inspiration to do "Beggar's Banquet."

Had never realized that Dylan had so powerfully re-directed the Stones.

Also: Ry Cooder spent a bunch of time with Mick and Keith at that time and was a pivotal influence on Keith's guitar playing.

Hmmmm...also Slim Harpo. He even gets a name check on "Exile."

And, of course, Little Walter is Jagger's biggest influence on the harp.

Of course also, from very early on, they were big fans of Jimmy Reed. Charlie likes The Bird, and Keith has his new roots planted on a Bob Marley/Tom Waits combo I think.

Inez and Charlie Foxx, they toured Europe with the Stones ca. '64, they were a big early influence. Mick cited Inez Foxx as who he learned a lot of dance moves from. From Greensboro NC !
thanks!
