2 Day Hollywood Bowl "Show" Answers Critics

The Stones answered their critics Tuesday night in Hollywood ... or should I say with their two day show at the Hollywood Bowl. Not only did they change eight songs between the Sunday and Tuesday shows, during the “2 day show” they played five songs from the new album (plus Keith’s Infamy twice) ... The three ABB songs Tuesday night, Rough Justice, Rain Fell Down and It Won’t Take Long (along with Sunday’s Back of My Hand and Oh No Not You Again) showed that the Stones are still alive and can generate plenty of excitement without playing songs we all knew in Junior High School. Rough Justice and Rain Fell Down were far and away the most interesting songs on the Tuesday set list. The lead guitar and Darryl’s bass line in Rain kicked major ass. Get Off My Cloud - with its new poppy arrangement and jangly guitar lines was also great. As Tears Go By was another great surprise. Other highlights for me included seeing two shows without having to hear Miss You, and my first show in twenty years without being subjected to It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (not that I don’t like it). Of the thirty-five or so shows I’ve seen over the past thirty plus years, this was the only venue (other than the Hollywood Palladium in ‘72) that was actually designed for music (not sports). It makes a world of difference ... trust me. The Stones still rock and they proved to me that their new music continues to be vital and can still raptly hold the attention of Stones fans.

They don't listen. They rule. It has been the plan all the way. You don't tell Picasso how he should paint his art. And the Stones do their own stuff without having to check out what impatient hard core fans think. The tour is less than three months old and they are right on schedule. The greatest rock'n roll band in the world. And they will soon arrive to a city near you...

Couldn't have said that better myself.

Rough Justice.
Oh No Not You Again.
Infamy.
Rain Fall Down.
Back Of My Hand.

When they hit Europe, we're gonna have many new ones I think (And hope).

What surprised me about the set list was that they played three new songs in a row!!!! For Micks standards that pretty gutsy, i like it!!!

Cheers,

Oh yeah. How could I forget that? That song was the reason I wrote the post in the first place. Then I forget it. I'm a joke. grinning smiley

Excellent news. A tip of the hat to the Stones for genuinely shaking it up at last

Long may it continue

I didn't listen to ABB for a week by now, but I think It Won't Take Long would have been an instant classic if released on Sticky Fingers. It has everything the Stones ever did and it's great that it found it's way into the setlist. Rough Justice, ONNYA, IWTL... any rock band these days would give anything to write these. We get to see the stones do them live 40 years after.. Isn't life great.

actually I think they DO listen - sometimes

Its no coincidence that on recent tours, long neglected and forgotten songs like Moonlight Mile (No Security) and CYHMK (Licks) were brought into the set which had topped fans' wish-lists for some time and been the subject of much debate on internet forums. Same with the inclusion of 'Sway' on this tour at one show.

Not that they're going to build a show around such songs - nor should they be expected to - but they are conscious to some degree of what 'lost gems' hardcore fans are clamouring to hear. Playing those songs are a reaction to that.

> They don't listen. They rule.

Judging from his solo efforts, Mick Jagger usually does listen.

> You don't tell Picasso how he should paint his art.

Did Picasso jump back 3 periods to paint cubistic pictures instead of blue ones just because
95% of the crowd howls for cubism?

> And the Stones do their own stuff without having to check out what impatient hard core fans think.

And the newest song of their last live record, Keith-songs excepted, was Neighbours (1983).
Well, long awaited by impatient hardcore fans for 20 years ...

Great news! I'm sure when they hit the european continent next year they will be excellent prepared to kick some major ass. They're trying a few things out here and there in the US, like they did on every tour and when they're finally in Europe there we got to see how it really got to be. Can't wait!

what do they rule - they are the greatest rock and roll circus yes,but they are
not the greatest live band anymore come on now.any band could do what the stones
did and play new material off a new record.

They are of course the greatest live band today and of all times. Nobody is close to them.

Rough Justice, Rain Fell Down and It Won’t Take Long in a row is indeed gutsy! I like it, but what about the audience in the Bowl? Did they appreciate this or they go for a beer? Just curious.

>The Stones apparently are willing to settle for the audience going home thinking, "Boy, those guys can still play 'Brown Sugar.' "

Wouldn't it be better if those fans, having heard some of the new songs, went home thinking, "Wow, I never dreamed they could be that good again."

Maybe he had something to do with it if not the fans on IORR.

just to add to that..I thought the justification behind the repetitive and 'safe' setlists up until yesterday was precisely the opposite of what you're now saying - namely, they're playing what most people want/demand/expect them to play and not necessarily what they themselves feel like playing.
