Jimi Hendrix Bassist Billy Cox Defends Kenny Wayne Shepherd

Last week blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd had his 2021 nomination for Best Blues Rock Artist by the Blues Foundation and the Blues Music Awards rescinded, and his father Ken Shepherd was kicked off the foundation’s Board of Directors after revelations that Kenny Wayne Shepherd previously owned a replica Dodge Charger similar to the one featured in the popular CBS television show Dukes of Hazzard.

The daughter of blues legend Muddy Waters posted to social media, “It has come to my attention that a winner of the Blues Foundation Award for Best Blues Something or Other proudly displayed a Confederate Flag on his social media pages, drove around with it on his **cking car … Why haven’t y’all descended on the Blues Foundation in droves and demand they rescind that award to that mother**cking racist?”

For his part Kenny Wayne Shepherd explained that he’d retired the car “years ago” and covered the Confederate symbol that sits on top of the car. He said in part, “It was completely against my values and offensive to the African American community which created the music I love so much and I apologize to anyone that I have unintentionally hurt because of it … I want to make something very clear and unequivocal; I condemn and stand in complete opposition to all forms of racism and oppression and always have.“

Nonetheless, the Blues Foundation has stood by their decision to exclude Kenny Wayne Shepherd from consideration for awards, despite Shepherd’s long history of supporting black blues legends, including his Grammy-nominated project 10 Days Out: Blues from the Backroads from 2004.

Now, a high profile member of the rock and blues community who toured and collaborated with Kenny Wayne Shepherd over the years has come out in support of of the blues guitarist. Billy Cox was the bass player who backed up Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock, and later became a member of Hendrix’s “Band of Gypsys” that proceeded The Jimi Hendrix Experience trio. The 81-year-old has also collaborated with Sam Cooke, Slim Harpo, Etta James, and many more. He also performs in Jimi Hendrix tribute bands trying to keep the Hendrix legacy alive.

“The Mrs. and I know Kenny,” Billy Cox said in a statement on Sunday (3-21). “We have traveled many miles together with Kenny, his band and his management. Lots of days and nights together in close quarters. The Mrs. even calls, Kenny and Noah (vocalist KWS Band) her ‘youngins.’ For us that says it all about the kind of person that Kenny is and we know that he does not deserve the ‘cross-town traffic’ that he is caught in … I value Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s talent as an artist, respect and applaud the way he treats his family and fellow man.”

Billy Cox—who is also well-known for collaborating with Charlie Daniels over the years and participating in Charlie’s cross-genre Volunteer Jams—also spoke specifically about The Dukes of Hazzard, and about the hazards of dismantling history in his statement. Billy Cox also spoke about how people should be focused on the real injustices for black artists in music, which is the undervaluing, and underpayment over the years.

I hope everyone has been doing “OK” since we last talked. In challenging times like these, “OK” is an Ok place to be.

I came out of hibernation because I heard about Kenny Wayne Shepherd having his nomination for Blues Rock Artist of the Year being rescinded by one of those Blues outfits. It seems that the basis of this rescinding is this: Kenny has a replica car like the one in the very popular DUKES OF HAZZARD television show.

I have not talked to Kenny and will not take the liberty of getting off into his head. But I do believe that since Kenny is around our son’s age, he saw a car that was a replica of the car in a favorite tv show that he watched growing up and being a successful musician, he had the money to buy the replica. Why not? I understand he had the controversial flag on top of the car covered….Why the selective outrage? “Who Knows “? I just don’t understand.

Being an African American musician for over 60 years and starting out in Jim Crow south, you must know that I have some deep tire tracks across my back. Most importantly, if one wants to be outraged about something: why not about those black artists from back in the day that have not rightly received recognition or payment for their music? Most of popular American music is based on their contributions. It can be rightly argued. Some of these cats were my mentors, I knew many, played with a lot of them and heard about others. That is my History. I could tell you some stories that would make you pull out a towel. Financial misuse, abuse, being neglected, living and dying broke, while the profiteers continue to live large off naive and vulnerable black artists.

By the way, my son and his friends would watch the show many Friday nights on a big screen television at a local pizza restaurant. His mom and I would be there, all enjoying the show. We are not politically naive or historically ignorant, we saw the flag and heard the name(s) but never did we detect any hint or suggestion that demeaned our culture or our ancestors. Neither do I remember any defending, justifying or attacking either side of the issue(s) and conflict. So, there was no temptation to fight the war again, while watching a television show.

Trust me, we were more than aware but we never- ever stopped to resent or be angry about the car or some of the historical names mentioned and shown. There were “some good ol’ boys” and then there were the comically bad guys. We enjoyed the show, the laughs together and the pizza.

With all that being said, the Mrs. and I know Kenny. We have traveled many miles together with Kenny, his band and his management. Lots of days and nights together in close quarters. The Mrs. even calls, Kenny and Noah (vocalist KWS Band) her “youngins”. For us that says it all about the kind of person that Kenny is and we know that he does not deserve the “cross-town traffic” that he is caught in.

Let us not overlook that this controversy speaks to a BIGGER ISSUE and that is the dismantling of our country’s history. I believe, to avoid and to correct previous mistakes, we must see it all. History must be comprehensive, although most times it has not been. WE OVERLY KNOW THAT…. and…that is why we speak now. To dismantle and to do away with, could make it easier to later claim certain events or atrocities never happened; because, there would be no reminders. Show the history, the good, bad and ugly, warts and all. It can serve as a reminder for us to avoid the pitfalls of human nature and the knowledge that we are obligated to pass on.

American History is filled with great contributors, many were flawed statesmen, geniuses and trailblazers but their flaws should never be the excuse to dismiss or undermine their value. Most especially, I’m reminded of the Master who challenged: “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone…”…By the way, we remember all the accusers, turned and left.

It is a spiritual attribute; therefore, Love or its kindreds can never be legislated or forced. Everyone should have the right or freedom to like or to NOT like me, appreciate or NOT appreciate me, agree with me or not agree with me. In that way I’m protecting my expressions by protecting yours.

I value Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s talent as an artist, respect and applaud the way he treats his family and fellow man. All else, Kenny Wayne Shepherd should be STONE FREE to do as he pleases.

Stay Free, The Last Gypsy, Billy Cox-A bass player

based upon continuing revelations of representations of the Confederate flag on Shepherd’s “General Lee” car, guitars and elsewhere.

I'm just wondering two things

1) If he gets rid of the car, will they reinstate his nomination? Or is he "banned for life" or something?

(point: how can KWS be "redeemed?" Or do people now consider him "beyond redemption?"

it's easy to pass judgement and call out the lynch-mob....it's not as easy to forgive and/or provide avenues for redemption (if you think what he has done is soooooo horrible).

2) The quote from the Award People makes it sound like he is a raging racist waving the C-Flag everywhere he goes....where are the "continuing . . . representations" (of the C-Flag) on the "guitars and elsewhere" they claim exist?

OK..he built a replica car years ago and shoved it in storage. Check.

but, this quote makes it sound like he's Lynyrd Skynyrd w/ the "Stars and Bars" on full display all the time.

I've seen KWS many times, dating back to 1995 (ish) when I used to see him in dive-bars....I've never seen a Confederate Flag anywhere on his guitar, clothes or stage....

ever.

maybe I missed something?

can somebody show me some actual evidence of these "continuing representations" of the Confederate Flag? I will gladly rescind my above-statements if it can be demonstrated that he is somebody who displays the C-Flag in "continuing representations"

(I know he posed w/ a "General Lee" fender as part of an article about the car (15 years ago).....that can be seen here

but, other than that, I've seen nothing and found nothing....(I don't do social media, so if it is there, please enlighten me)

incidentally, that article about KWS and his car was the same year that the DoH Movie came out (2005).

it was directed by a person of color - an American of Indian descent....go figure

I suppose we have to forbid him from winning any Movie Awards now...and Jessica Simpson and that "Jacka$$" guy need to be publicly called-out...since they starred in the movie.

In other news: Daisy Duke was hot and anybody who says otherwise is lying.

The social media post that sparked the controversy.

"The Way My Daddy Looks At a White Man Winning a Blues Foundation Music Award While Waving A F*****g Confederate Flag" -- a powerful message from Mercy Morganfield, daughter of the great Muddy Waters. Contains strong language but if you love the blues, please read this

The Way My Daddy Looks At a White Man Winning a Blues Foundation Music Award While Waving A F*cking Confederate Flag
Blues Foundation— have y’all lost your minds? It has come to my attention that a winner of the Blues Foundation Award for Best Blues Something or Other proudly displayed a Confederate Flag on his social media pages, drove around with it on his f*cking car. When this was pointed out to the Blues Foundation the official statement is “We are not a political organization.”
Huh?
What do you all think the Blues is at it’s core? At its foundational roots? If not political?

This type of shit is not just pissing off black people; it is pissing off a lot of white people who understand the blues at a deeper level than “a white man growling out what he thinks sounds like Howling Wolf.”

The problem with blk folks in the blues is the wyte guys can always find that one blk guy who agrees to turn the other cheek.
They can always find that one blk musician who won’t rock the boat.
Won’t question the status quo.
Won’t tell them they are appropriating when they are.
Won’t tell them they do not understand blk history or the history of this country at a nuanced enough level to make racial judgement calls.
Will allow them to compartmentalize blues as just music and race as just politics.

The white folks in the blues industry put those type of blk people on Boards and in Leadership positions.
And that is one of the main problems.
The second problem are the blk folks. Yes, I’m about to talk about y’all’s blk asses.

Whenever you have an industry heavily dominated by wyte men— colonized and coopted by wyte men. Blk folks become “step and fetch it” by default.
They become messy, gossipy, old bitches who would rather turn each other in then come together and overthrow the monarchy.

They fall quickly into the role of House N#gg@s and Field N#gg@s. Erebody wants to be a House N#gg@.
And to become one, the massahs need you to turn on the field N#gg@s.
So they won’t book you. They won’t invite you to play in Blues festivals. They blackball you from the industry. Work dries up. And blk blues musicians continue feeding from wyte men’s tits.

Lemme tell y’all blk asses something.
My daddy did it because he had no choice. He was born in the early twentieth century when a blk man could become strange fruit in the blink of an eye. What is your excuse in 2021. Daddy had a third grade education. He never worked in exchange for a Cadillac like “they” want to depict in the movies. He knew exactly how much money Chess Records owed him— but a black man in the fifties had no legal recourse— none. They were just glad not to have to be share croppers.
Daddy’s greatest rebellion was refusing to return to Mississippi to perform. He avoided the Confederate Flag- worshipping southern states altogether. That was then and this is now.

What is y’all’s excuse? Why haven’t y’all descended on the Blues Foundation in droves and demand they rescind that award to that motherfucking racist?
“We are not a political organization.” They whine. “Well, you are now!” You state emphatically.
What is wrong with y’all!
The blues was a political language. It was the language of the voiceless. The powerless. The MEN like my father who had no recourse.

My dad wrote “I’m a man, not a boy.”
What do wyte racists call black men ?

Do you still think Dad’s song was not political?
I resigned from the Blues Foundation board last week. I did not have the bandwidth to manage board participation after my brother and grandmother’s deaths. I really believe my wyte and blk colleagues on the board have the best intentions to “do the right thing.” I also believe progressive voices, like mine, are often suppressed by old fart ass members who have done the same thing, the same way, for 20+ years and won’t hear that their baby they created in 1981 no longer fits the bill in 2021.
All boards suffer with the malady of old timers who refuse to progress.
I say all the time that the blues is a music genre, an art form, a historical political stance, that has been coopted by wyte men who subsequently put it in a little cage and wouldn’t allow it to grow or evolve.

Every music form has been allowed an evolution. If country music had not been allowed to evolve beyond the music of Conway Twitty then the renaissance of country music that has florished today would have never happened.
My dad would have never wanted to see the Blues, his Blues, die in a wyte man’s cage because that wyte man wanted to keep it all to himself and call it protection.

Young blk people can’t play the blues because wyte men have to produce them and promote them and exploit them. Brown people can’t play the blues for the same reason. But take a young wyte guy with a modicum of talent who gets on a stage and does his best impersonation of Muddy Waters and bingo bango—he’s a rising star.
And that’s some b*llshit.
And that is why 90% of the blues awards attendees are middle-age, balding, white men with ponytails.

All of them hollering about keeping the blues alive— when they’re the ones killing it. All of them trying to find those 1 or 2 black folks to legitimize them. The brilliance of a guy like Christone "Kingfish" Ingram is allowed — a fixed pie—while the brilliance of millions of other aspiring black and brown blues musicians are stifled under their watchful, mediocre gaze.
This is some bullshit people.

They are pushing upon me all the @#$%& time from every angle to get me to sell my dad’s publishing rights, likeness, and image. Because these MFers need to claim ownership of all they see. They can’t just listen to and enjoy Dad’s music they need to control it.

Definition of White-Man-Itis: everyone must suckle from a wyte man’s tits.
The Blues is like a dragon, bitches, it cannot be tamed. It cannot be owned. It cannot be enslaved. And wyte blues artists sucks its titties not the other way around.
It was born in bondage. In the southernmost part of the Mississippi delta. Where a confederate flag represented the very bondage it was born into and the very men who would gladly have hanged McKinley Morganfield from a tree if he was in their town after sundown.
Now, you give a blues award to a man who feels the need to decorate his @#$%& car with a Confederate Flag? That’s a brand new kind of stupid. How @#$%& tone deaf are you?
The blues is more than just a music genre that’s what you are missing.
It should be shared with and cherished by all people, all races, all genders, everywhere who are willing to not only love the music but understand the suffering from which the music was born.
IT SHOULD NOT BE CONTROLLED BY A HANDFUL OF WHITE MAN AND A PREDOMINANTLY WHITE BLUES FOUNDATION. ????
If one of the whitest institutions in American history, NASCAR, can ban the Confederate Flag, Blues Foundation, why can’t you?
You are not a political organization? You say. BULLSHIT! Every organization in America is political right now!Don’t you dare hide behind the skirts of neutrality to keep you from doing what you must.
After all, if it wasn’t for men like my father there would be no blues. There would be no wyte men exploiting the blues. There would be no Blues Foundation.
Y’all better remember from whence you came.
Every time you pay your mortgage you got Muddy to thank, and BB and James Cotton and KoKo Taylor and Etta James and Shameka Copeland and Kingfish and Marquise Knox.
That @#$%& waving the Confederate flag ain’t put nan dime in your pocket. So why the @#$%& are you lining his?
Write the Blues Foundation and tell them you do not agree. Thx

Mercy Morganfield's post is a textbook example of how not to talk to people.

KWS was ignorant to get the replica...he was ignorant to keep it. Done.

But, Ms. Morganfield is also ignorant if she thinks foul language, half-truths, outright lies, insults and character-assassination is the way to move-forward on the "race" issue in America.

I ask again: can she (or anybody) point to any OTHER examples of his "promotion" of the CFlag? Other evidence of "racism?"

If not, I take issue with labeling him a "racist M-fer".

he put it in storage...he should've gotten rid of it. OK. BUt, he was NOT out waving the flag around as he is being painted out to be....

by the way, what is a "wyte" person?

If Muddy Waters spoke out back in his time he would have been lynched. Agree racism and stupidity won't go away but progress was being made with both until 5 or so years ago. The last 5 years set everything back a long way.

Billy Cox, a distinguished African American musician, says Kenny Wayne's ok. He toured with him in "Experience Hendrix" a few years back. BB King called Kenny Wayne "my grandson". Not clear to me that Mercy Morganfield knows him or ever met him. I do tend to agree with her that The Blues Foundation is useless. Lets cancel them.

This is spot on. Those who are racists (see comments above) want to cancel those who are not racist. They whine about cancel culture but are just as pro cancel culture with one difference. They want to cancel everything that is pro diversity. Waiting to be flamed for calling out their bs because that is what they do.

"Whenever you have an industry heavily dominated by wyte men— colonized and coopted by wyte men.

And blk blues musicians continue feeding from wyte men’s tits."

The social media post that sparked the controversy.

a powerful message from Mercy Morganfield, daughter of the great Muddy Waters. There would be no white men exploiting the blues

What did she do in her life except cashing in from Dad's work?
And Muddy probably dealt with racist white @#$%& all his life, without making a fuss about it, ever.

I have a bad news for social justice (online) warriors :
racism won't disappear, ever.
stupidity won't disappear, ever.

Buddy Guy, much as he loved Muddy, says in his book that Muddy used to beat his women whenever he felt they got out of line. That's a lot worse than what Kenny did, in my opinion. Nobody's perfect. Buddy's book is excellent, by the way.

All award shows only give out awards to white people when they absolutely have to now. Awards are BS anyway.

It's not longer equality of opportunity, it's now equality of results which is pure communistic ideology.

Saw a Canadian Military recruit commercial it was 50% black people which is totally fine. But blacks are 2% of the population. It wasn't big on the Asian, Indian, middle eastern and indigenous populations in the ad which are all much larger.

It's all pandering to social pressure.

Sure.
Whataboutism is often used to deflect.

Hardly relevant.

Se he basically behaved like a good 'boy' - like he supposed to behave, like knowing his place - isn't that what you mean?

Anyway, interesting bit that by her daughter about "Mannish Boy" - never thought that way.

The Billy Cox statement is awesome and well versed. There are to many people in the world today just waiting to be outraged, offended and cancel people without even knowing all the facts or the person they are canceling.
