'Obscure' cover versions of Rolling Stones songs
Posted by: G. the Cock ()

I've just found a 1986 live recording of Lone Justice, featuring them doing "All Down The Line". I do really love Lone Justice/Maria McKee and remember to be really surprised seeing them do ADTL on their 86 tour (saw it on their show in Hamburg, Germany, lovely!)!

Here it is, if you're interested: [s52.yousendit.com]

By the way, I'm always interested in covered Stones! I'm not at home currently, but remember to have f.e. "@#$%& Blues" by The Beasts Of Bourbon (awesome!), "Claudine" - don't remember the performer - and "It's Not Easy" done live by US hardrock band Blue Öyster Cult (hope I find that tape!) besides the well known stuff.

Anybody else interested in this topic?

MC5's version of "Empty Heart", on a CD published by the British magazine Uncut, has a lovely spirit!

Yes, Ringo, remember that one, you're right! Same spirit as has "Miss Amanda Jones" by the Flamin' Groovies!

Great

Think - The Little Killers
Satisfaction - Otis Redding
Connection - Ramblin' Jack Elliot

Strange

No Expectations - The Dirt Bombs...Builds from Expectations to Sympathy
Andre's Blues - The Greasy Chickens..Dedicated to Andre Williams but built around Andrew's Blues

Not real good

Let's Spend The Night Together - Teddy Brown & The Discolettes

Always loved The Pogues version of HTW.

Also, Bowie's Let's Spend The Night Together and more recently, Cat Power's brilliantly haunting Satisfaction cover.

I definitely agree Kurt! Their version is VERY haunting. Love the echo in that song.smiling smiley

Also: Satisfaction by Tom Petty, both acoustic and electric versions of JJF by GN'R and Street Fighting Man by Oasis.

Check out "Songs Of The Rolling Stones - All Blues'd Up!" on Compendia.
It is a collection of Stones covers done by blues greats. Some highlights are a very gospelly YCAGWYW by Luther Allison, Tumblin Dice by Johnny Copeland with his daughter Shemekia, a blused out Satisfaction by Junior Wells, It's All Over Now by Bobby Womack (a cover of a Stones cover of his own song), and a down & dirty Mississippi blues version of HTW by Taj Mahal. It's a fun listen!

I think it's one of the best Stones covers ever done.
MC5 had such an unbelivable energy! Definitely one of the best underground hard rock bands that ever existed.

The version you refer to comes from the MC5 bootleg "Thunder Express", recorded live in studio at Château d'Hérouville, outside Paris, march 1972.
You can hear it here:

On halloween night 2009 The Phish played Exile in his entirety and in the same night The Gov't Mule played a (awesome) set full of Stones covers.

In 1966 the english group The Eyes (under the name The Pupils) recorded a full album of Stones covers "Tribute to the Rolling Stones"
