Hey all! As a Hendrix fan i wonder why there is so much more available filmed shows from '69/'70 of Hendrix than the Stones? Henrix was at least filmed on the following events:
-Atlanta
-Woodstock
-Berkley
-Isle of Wight
-Maui
-MSG
All of which is offisial.

Stones just MSG, London and Altamony.
Only part of Hyde park and MSG/Altamont has been released..?
Was Hendrix more popular?

I think you kind of answered your own question with that list. Most of those shows were festival events.

festivals is one aspect, another might be outdoor shows (since the stage lightning was rather dark in those days it was easier to film open air shows)

Jimi was something extraordinary. Though I was too small at the time but I think people realized how special he was and thought it was a good idea to capture as much as they could. Just my opinion.

Yeah, Jimi was a phenomenon, a force of nature to watch at all cost.

Jimi was on tour pretty much 24/7 for those 3 years while the Stones did about 20-25 shows with only a few festivals. Aside from the Woodstock movie which was kind of an outlier, there was very little commercial outlet for live concert footage at the time.

Why..............because The Stones weren't in festivals back then....or it was their own festival.

People have forgotten that Jimi was a headliner. Probably the hottest thing on the live circuit during that period, over the Stones even. Led Zeppelin was just coming along. Maybe it was management. While the Grateful Dead were memorializing all their concerts with high quality recordings in the mid-60s, the Stones were barely getting mono recordings, like the barely listenable Hawaii '66 concert. Got Live If You Want It is a mess. There was a whole European Tour in '67 we should have had filmed and recorded in stereo. The technology was there, but somehow the Stones organization dropped the ball.

The Stones played literally 29 concerts in 1969.

Five of them were filmed professionally for broadcast or cinematic release.

I'd say thats an astonishingly high ratio and a large amount

Certainly more than any other act I can think of that year.

My guess, too.

a lot of Dylan shows were professionally recorded and or filmed in the mid sixties – especially the UK tour is 65 and 66

Another thought is maybe there is something and they're holding onto it. Afterall weren't the Mocambo tapes destroyed or unusable?

Jimi was the hot new act of the time and the trend for filming entire gigs was something that really got going in the late 60s. Also apart from the European tour of 67 the Stones didn't play live much. Thankfully the 69 tour was captured.

Apparently there is some more film shot by Peter Whitehead of the Stones at the Royal Albert Hall in 66 but its probably owned by ABCKO who can't agree a release fee with the Whitehead estate.

At least 7 shows were (partially) filmed professionally. Oakland was reportedly filmed by Bill Graham.

None of us know what is in their vaults.

Obviously, they have films we can see snippets in some of their newer videos.

At least The Stones got some great footage from their 'prime' era (which leads up to 1982 imo).

Some bands like Pink Floyd have next to zero pro-shot live material from their classic period (1972-1977), considering their popularity.

to me any concert film by anybody is rather boring – even if it's professionally film, multi-cam etc. I usually watch it once, maybe twice and then never again. I'd rather listen to the music

It's actually 7 because i forgot Royal Albert Hall '69, and you can't multiply with 3 because only 1/4 of the shows are released. It's more like 5x0,25 against 7

Somehow we need to turn this into a Beatles vs. Stones thing.

Not circulating though (other than a brief clip of one of the London ballroom shows in Dec 69). No doubt if the Stones had broken up or died years ago, it would all be out by now

The Hollywood Bowl is a mixed bag for audio quality. The performance however is amazing! I'm guessing this isn't a proper soundboard recording, maybe a microphone or two onstage like some of the other live albums?
