To all who say "no variety"

Since I apparently have way too much time on my hands, I just calculated that I’ve heard the Stones play 72 songs in the 8 shows I’ve seen (1 Voodoo, 2 Babylon, 1 No Security, 1 Licks, 3 Bigger Bang). That comes out to 9 NEW songs every show – not a bad rate, I’d say!

the variety question is more specific to the current tour, which has featured exactly ONE song (covers excepted, and forgetting the one-off Sway attempt) that hasn't been played to death on recent tours: She's So Cold. And, even that one isn't getting played every night.

yes, if you leave out everything that doesn't suit your theory,
you have a pretty dazzling argument there, T&A!
(i'm sure there's some reason why the numbers from ABB "don't count" either ...)

How about Shattered?

Shattered was played at every show I was during the Licks tour. Sad to see She's So Cold is not in the set lately, it was one of the only surprises/highlights for me. The bad thing is that 2 of the shows I went to this tour they only played 3 songs off the new album. Can't think of any other tour where the band released an album to launch a tour and they hardly played any songs from it.

everything? the ONLY thing is playing something they haven't played to death in recent years. I don't know how you could disagree with that - that's merely a factual representation, not a theory.

Re: To all who say "no variety"

Shattered was played at almost every '94 concert although,it was only played a handful of times on the Licks Tour. The reason Sway doesn't really count is because it was only played at one show & they reportedly say they won't do it again. She's So Cold counts because,it has been 23 or 24 years since they played it at every show of the '81/'82 tour.

Yeah but it's only been played 4 times on the Licks tour I wouldn't call that "played to death".

Reptile,
Well they played it in NY and Boston both times right after Keith says they look at what they played last time around and try to give the fans something new.. BS. Look at the setlists since Shattered was released in 1978, Shattered has been played much more than many of their biggest hits. I just don't think of Shattered as a rare live song or a song we don't hear much live.

The new songs are a given. The covers have been good but,may be costing us good original songs. The day they won't play three new songs from the album they are supposedly touring behind is the day they should hang it up.

for crying in the dust -
they would ALL sound rare if you weren't spoiling your appetites with bootlegs you aren't supposed to have

Damn - I hope that doesn't happen in the next two shows - I'm seeing them at the one after! LOL

I'd like to see a more varied setlist, but if you think about it they are playing quite a few songs the average Stones concert-goer wouldn't know: in St. Pete for example they played Rough Justice, Oh No Not You Again, Back Of My Hand, Infamy, The Worst, She's So Cold, Dead Flowers, Bitch, Night Time, You Got Me Rocking and Out of Control. That's 11 out of 20 songs. Why, I believe that's over half.

Cutting it down to nine warhorses is pretty good. How many are they supposed to play, four or five? Ye olde average concert-goer would be pretty pissed if he only knew 25% of the songs they played.

She's So Cold, Dead Flowers, Bitch, All Down the Line, Rocks Off, You Got Me Rocking, Rough Justice, Out of Control, Sweet Virginia and Sway.

I'm sorry, but if people don't know these tunes, they shouldn't be taking up space at a Stones show.

I am a diehard fan, but let's face it most people at the show aren't. They are fans but not fanatics like us. They have bought probably 40 Licks and one or two others. The only song on that list that's on 40 Licks is You Got Me Rocking. If somebody likes the hits and hasn't heard the rest, they shouldn't be allowed to see the band? I don't agree.

That's not the right debate point, IMO, ONNYA....It's if somebody likes the hits and hasn't heard the rest, they shouldn't be the reason the more knowledgeable fans don't get satisfaction with a more interesting setlist

Not "taking up space" and not "being allowed to be there" arent the same

the show is being tailored to suit people who are too lazy or cheap to buy/appreciate anything outside the musical confines of "40 Licks" at the expense of people who genuinely support the band's music.

the show and the band's creativity and self-respect suffers as a result

IMO the Stones could easily please both sides. By counter-acting the warhorse 50% for the 40-Lickers with the other set half packed with extra rarities for us diehards. For every SMu they play a number from Buttons.

Too lazy maybe but the accusation of being too cheap is questionable.

The thing is, the people at the show who only know the hits outnumber us probably 70% to 30%. We can say yes those people should be like us and buy everything the Stones ever did and memorize it, but it is their choice and for whatever reason they haven't. Maybe they can't afford it, maybe they don't have time, maybe they have a chronic fear of giant lips, who knows. Should the Stones confuse and annoy 70% of the audience just to please us? I say no, I am not that selfish.

Why not play songs the whole audience can enjoy? The diehards can still enjoy Jumping Jack Flash or Satisfaction (well, some of us can, anyway; I personally still like those songs), but the average fan isn't going to enjoy some obscurity from Between The Buttons. Again, I am all for a more varied setlist, but I think you have to be realistic about it.

I dont think it is, Rialb

I personally cant square the circle that someone can supposely like a band so much that they will have no qualms about paying $450 for a concert ticket - yet they wont spend $12 or $15 to buy a CD..

..and it says something that the Stones feel too reticent to play tracks like Sway from albums like Sticky fingers (which sold about 8 million copies and is one of their top 3 sellers) because so many of the people going to see them in 2005 DONT recognise the song

Why do people keep acting like every ticket to this tour is $450? There are plenty of good seats available for $150 or less. If I could see Cream, for example, for $150 I'd do it, but I don't own everything they ever put out, would not rush out and buy it after dropping $150 on a ticket, and would be disappointed if at least two thirds of the show were not songs I recognize from their greatest hits, which I do own. That's because I like Cream and would like to see them, but I'm not fanatical about them. There are plenty of people who feel the same way about the Stones.

ohnonotyouagain,
why does playing songs everyone know mean they must play Miss You and You Got Me Rocking every night. They can please everyone if they just play some different hits. Everyone knows Mother's Little Helper or Paint It Black. Why can't those be the warhorses that come at the end of the show. They did that with PIB at MSG and went over well. I am sick of people saying they have to play these 15 hits. This band has tons of hits that even the average fan would know. The Stones only care about making a show that is very commercial and that leaves us fans pissed off and disappointed.

there arent really, if youre being realistic about it. And in some venues (MSG for example) there was hardly anything under $450 at all (even though it was announced that these tickets would only be for 5-10% of the total seats available)

However, I've seen plenty of reviews where people sitting in the highest priced seats have commented on fans around them who didnt 'get' anything but the most obvious songs - I've seen that on previous tours myself. In fact I've seen plenty of people in the most expensive seats at shows who could barely bring themselves to clap.

Cream were an active band for about two and a half years. I would imagine that it would therefore be very hard for them NOT to put together a setlist that would mostly consist of their most recognizable songs

That's the point! PLAY WAR HORSES but not the SAME ones every night! GOD, off of the 40 Licks cd alone, there are a ton of very recognizable songs that if rotated, would satisfy everyone!
