IMHO graveyard watch quietly and unnoticed touched on a truth.

I think they sound fine. The guitars have not roared this loud since 81.

Well, maybe YOU (we) have changed, too.
We all do, we change with age, experience, etc.
So, maybe it's normal that something that "grabbed" us 10 years ago
just doesn't anymore after a while, for no particular reason.
C'est la vie.

You are to blame for following a band in their sixties. They have given enough music you are all spoilt brats.

just because they're in their sixties does not preclude them playing well.
has anybody heard 90 some year old pine top perkins latest cd? merle haggard's strangers still swing. how about them old cats on that great, relatively recent motown dvd? the hodges brothers still groove behind al green on last years 'i can't stop'. the holmes brothers...especially live. and the last time i saw bb king's band they were punishing.
i love the stones and although MJ's periodic apathy seems to have been buried some time ago - one wishes he had the interest to at least ennunciate some of his half ass performances on the awful 'love you live' - i would venture basesd solely on what i've read of the man that KR has always been the antithesis to that. in the past, it's not unreasonable to consider the correlation between KR's sobriety and his instrumental competence. after all....this is the guitarist who gave us 'monkey man' and 'can't you hear me knocking'- top shelf dislays of prowess for sure.
again, based on what i've read, KR would pistol whip RW if Ron came off like he didn't give a shit. i don't think charlie's ever changed.
bill wyman and leon russell believed they came up with the reason why the stone's had such a unique sound (this article was around the time of 'black and blue'..i'm fairly certain). their assertion was that bands quite naturally follow the drummer. not so for the stones said they - the stones followed KR, thus creating a microsecond delay resulting in the pulse like effect that i and others like chelsea d miss so much.
it sounds to me like the above dynamic is no longer part of the equation at least some of the time.

JJ - speaking of Mick Taylor!!!

I NEVER remember hearing of any of the show's from the late 60's to early 70's that sucked, everyone one I heard about was GREAT!! band sounded better live
than their recordings, not too many bands you could say that about!!

Maybe the current Stones could use a invusion??? I wonder who could
pickup their musical end of things??? let me think??

How many other bands have fanatics who see 30-40 shows a tour? Paul McCartney? The Who?? Maybe a few, but the Stones probably have a few hundred people who see 10+ shows every tour...and a lot of us are here.

I think it's just burnout on our part. The spectacle has become rote. The gargantuan stages are rote. The songs are rote...well, at least Forty Licks had some exciting setlist changes.

I'm not entirely blaming us fanatics. Keith and Ronnie are burned out...too much abuse has shorted out their brains. Mick is a consummate professional who carries every show admirably but the wild dangerous rock'n'roller is long gone.

Add to it synchronizing all lighting to the songs, Michael Cohl's obsession with spectacle and profits, and Chuck setting tempos and counting songs in, and you have a band on autopilot that doesn't inspire anyone.

Things would be much better if Keith led the band like he used to instead of Chuck, but that would require him to sober up and get a bit more serious, and that's not gonna happen.

You seem to have no idea what I am talking about, BornOnTheBayou. Attending 18 Licks shows does not mean that Licks was a great tour for me. I am a long-term fan since the early 70's and usually go to many shows each time they go on tour. But it is my feeling that the Stones live act is going down the hill - slowly, but at least for me notably. In musical terms, of course - and that does not mean that they are not able to deliver a great "show" that "pleases" a lot of people.

The one song you quote - Sway - demonstrates perfectly what I am talking about - if you have the chance, listen to the Columbus live version.

The 18 Licks shows I attended were planned well in advance, they were not really bad, but also not really exciting either - the theatre shows aside, of course.

Daryll is a great bass player. But I would rather have the Stones hire a rock'n roll or blues player for the bass parts. Then it would all roll again like with Wyman!
