Pay-back Time
Posted by: bassplayer617 ()

Ok, guys, this is an experiment. To give something back to the community, I'm gonna offer tracks from the most legendary Stones boot of all time, Brussels/Wembley 73.

Here's a sample-- "Happy", from Wembley (oops, my mistake-- it's actually from Brussels)

[s54.yousendit.com]

If this works, I'll try to upload the whole "best of" concert from this boot (Timeless Europe 73).

Next up, the so-called "best-ever" version of "Gimme Shelter" from Wembley 9/9/73:

Great. Remember, though, that the links are only good for 7 days -- therefore, for anyone who wants these, I'll space them in intervals.

Note: many of the hardcore already have these tracks--my intention is to make them available for the younger members, who may not have even been born when these legendary performances took place.

"Intro/Brown Sugar", with the drum roll that bounces from right to left.

More tomorrow -- the sequencing (so far ) should be Brown Sugar/Gimme Shelter/Happy. I'll post the remainder in the proper sequence.

Big smiles around my house tonight. These '73 live tunes, after all these years, are still quite simply amazing. Quite possibly the best live stuff I've ever heard. I mean, come one, Frampton Comes Alive? Let's get the band to get together and do an official release next year. Why wait for someone to pass?

Note: in those days, the Stones still played relatively short shows, with no more than 14-15 songs. It is somewhat ironical to me that a much-older band now plays not less than 2 hours, and at least 20 songs. I added up the time for this notional 1973 show-- it was a fast and furious 72 minutes.

Sorry to go on, but what always amazes me, is that this guy, Mick Taylor, at 20 years old, auditions for, get the gig, shows up, and plays his friggin ass off for the '69 tour and just does such an amazing job at catapulting the band to the top of the "live performance" world. Truly an outstanding job at blistering solos, Mick Taylor himself should be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. God Bless; and let's be thankful he was there! Brussels '73!!!

My apologies that these are not lossless wavs, but I still think they sound damn fine.

Next up in the setlist is the only Stones song that briefly mentions my home state.

Here is "Dancing With Mr. D"

To be exact, I live 12 miles west of Charleston, which puts me 25 miles or more from Cabin Creek. I don't know that area. Do you have family here?

Well, consider the ironies-- my dad was stationed in San Diego while he was in the navy back in the 50s. My mom went out to join him in '56, and I was born in Chula Vista CA in 1957. After dad was discharged, they returned to WV, and I've lived here ever since. Nevertheless, SOMETHING about spending my first three months in CA forever made me different. Was it the air, or the beach? I don't know. In any case, I never fit the mold as a typical West Virginian. I love Brian Wilson, the sound of distant waves in my ears, and I really love younger women. No accounting for that last point LOL. My wife is 14 years younger than me.

Sure, great Stones stuff, but definitely not the best one, I think, e.g. "Gimme Shelter": Atlantic City or Toronto '89 or Tokyo '90 and generally the versions during Urban Jungle are the better ones. "Angie", please hear Paris '76, fantastic soli from Ron wood and Billy Preston etc.

It was great that Taylor played slide on BS on the 1973 tour sure makes the song
blistering.Dancing With Mr D live sounds great and better then the studio cut.
Must be because of that guy named Taylor.Keith's killer riff sure works fine.
