Hi,I cant help but notice that Charlie is looking down and a little ill on the front cover of DW.It has been often said that the reason the Stones never toured behind DW was that Charlie had a heoin problem.Maybe this was why his face wasnt shown in full on the DW cover.Charlie is always clean shaven, but not in this case.

Yeah, when I heard that about charlie at that time, his pose on the cover is the first thing that occurred to me. It's disturbing to consider.

I read once that the heroin thing was very short-lived...something like three weeks...have you heard this?

Do you know why he became addicted?
He seemed so straight

He went through some personal problems with his wife and family. As he said in an interview he had a serious heroin problem for over a year. During that same time he was heavily drinking, too.

The reason why they didnĀ“t toured behind DW was that Mick wanted to launch his solo career. Not Charlie.

The heroin/drinking thing happened in the late '70's didn't it? DW was released in 1986.

He's probably looking down because he was ashamed of the album....

No. Charlie's heroin/drinking issues happened during the time of the recording and release of DW.

you dont think thats being a little over analytical?

if it was that much of a big deal, they could have avoided using a band picture, like they usually do

Dirty Work was the first album cover in many years to have a photo of the entire band on the front...

....and it is the worst album cover they have ever done!

i've read that they chose a shot with Charlie looking down because he was in really bad shape at the time.
"He wasn't really dying, but he looked like he was" - something like that.
(and yes it was due to heroin, drinking and other aberrant stuff in Charlie's lfe in the mid-80s. he talks about it in some interviews.)

... and while i'm here, here's the shot they almost used for the cover of DW.

maybe he's looking down because he just realised his fly was undone...

Charlie's heroin problem began in 1985 and lasted a year. It's right, that he was heavily drinking in those days. It's not clear if his private problems with his wife and family were the reason for drinking, or if they occurred because he was drinking ...

He once said that it was a crucial experience for him and that he's always been ashamed of being drunk during his father's burial. I think I've heard that he went throught the same ditoxication and withdrawal treatment process like Keith and Ronnie before.

I remember reading an interview with him when this album came out, he didn't even realize it had already been released. Now that could've been due to the things discussed in this thread, or maybe he just didn't feel it was their best work and was disinterested. I think it also mentioned he was more busy with planning the next tour with his jazz band.

For what it's worth...

They should've used that picture rather than the garish load of crap they actually did use...

Charlie did an interview for 60 minutes (this has been posted before) discussing a combo heroin/amphetemine addiction, which lasted a couple years

Somewhere--I've read that Charlie was really out of it one night in the studio (Pathe Marconi, CSPRING 1985), and really f-ed up his hand on a bottle of beer. i guess the bottle broke and Charile cut his hand up pretty bad. I recall Bill German memtioning in an '85 issue of 'Beggars Banquet" that the LP was tentatively dubbed "19 Stitches" (later to become "Dirty Work".) Some time after that I read that the Stones were very worried about Charlie after that incident.

Its probable that during the abscence of Charlie, (due to the 19 stitches on his hand), that Chuck Leavell played drums on "Deep Love", and Ronnie drums on "Sleep Tonight".

I agree. I've never seen that photo, it is a great one. Jagger in particular looks great. The cover to Dirty Work did suck (even though I mostly like the album). Worst cover ever!

i thought that charlie had said it was a 10 year problem on 60 minutes. Of course that would rival Keiths addiction so maybe i am remembering it wrong.

I recently saw the video for she's so cold and charlie looked awful. I bet his problems started in the late 70's early eighties and just progressed.
