Hi,
It's interesting this was brought up, as I just made a CD compilation of the "Big 4" albums - Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, & Exile On Main St.
The one song I was trying to fit in but wasn't sure where to put it was "I Just Want To See His Face." Ever since I can remember, when I first heard Exile this piece stuck out for some reason. It has a trance-like/groove quality to it that really does it for me. I think it's absolutely great!
I can see how some people don't like it, as it's not a song, but rather a glimpse of a random jam session. But it is these fleeting moments you get from time to time with the Stones that open your ears to the larger perspective of what they're all about. The Stones' music is not all about the hits, or even the structured songs. They like to jam and work grooves. Unfortunately I have found many of these moments on unreleased material, but none the less, these moments are there.
BTW, the CD I made was this:
1. Torn and Frayed - A
2. Loving Cup - G
3. You Got the Silver - F
4. Shine A Light - C
5. I Just Want To See His Face - C
6. Casino Boogie - A
7. No Expectations - E
8. Dear Doctor - E
9. Let It Bleed - C
10. Prodigal Son - E
11. Factory Girl - D
12. Salt of the Earth - E
13. Country Honk - G
14. Sweet Virginia - A
15. I've Got the Blues - G
16. Sway - F
17. Sweet Black Angel - G
18. Love In Vain - Bb
19. Moonlight Mile - G
20. Soul Survivor - C
Well, for anyone who cares, there it is. Also, the letters after each song represent the key the song is in. Knowing this helps so that there aren't, say, 5 songs in a row in the key of G. What do you think of this compilation?
Take care,
Dan
