Open G and Kent - in the north-east of England, Newcastle Brown is known as "dog".

We've done this post before, but my fave is currently Ringwood 49er, but only when on draft. Out of a bottle I tend to go for something like Duval. Out of a can, the best tends to be Stella, although I wouldn't normally drink a drauft nitrokeg.

However, I have NEVER been known to turn down ANY beer (except maybe Carling or Tennents).

Can we have a competition now to see who has the biggest beer belly?

I wonder why all the Americans on this board talk about their fav beer. There is no real beer in the US!!!
Beer is made in Germany, Czech Rep, The Netherlands and Denmark.

I checked a lot of American beer sorts and not a single one tasted like beer ...

My fav:
Budvar (the "original" Czech Budweiser)
Oktoberfest beer
Carlsberg

heineken

Meise,

Why do you have such an elitist attitude to beer and then list Carlsberg as one of your favourites?

You obviously haven't travelled around the US and tried some of the wornderful beer that comes out of the micro-breweries.

I happen to believe that many countries produce good beer, but that each one is different. You have to go there to try it though because beer doesn't travel well. This is particularly true of draft beers which, ideally, need to be tasted in the same town as they were brewed. (BV won't even go further than 10 yards from the brewing vat to taste it!)

Very true sjs, although of course the best American beers are copies of Euro styles. Stoudt's Trippel (made in Pennsylvania) is a fantastic knock-off of a Belgian style. Likewise Victory Golden Monkey. So far as the real thing, I'll vote for Piraat. My "always in the fridge" beer is good old Yuengling, from America's oldest brewery in Pottstown, Pa.

Thank you ooool boy. The mouth is runnin already...
Hurry to get the address; I put it away fairly soon.

I´ll get ya some heavy Sami (our aboriginals) &
Nordic beer brands (Hell, Postiljon, Jämtlands President);
I´ll pack it in some box.

But - will they live thru the flight? I just wonder...

Peterdv, you are right. Belgium has so many wonderful beers! But I really don't think that Jupiler or Grimbergen are among them winking smiley

All trappist beers are great (except perhaps Chimay). Unfortunately Westvletern is not so widely availabe. Not even in Belgium itself (or am I wrong?).

My top 5:
- Achel Blonde (trappist)
- Westvleteren 12
- La Binchoise Blonde
- Cantillion Gueuze
- Girardin Kriek

They are all from Belgium.

I know that I haven't tried every American beer, and I suppose I won't do it because I won't get 200 years old ... but my understanding of beer is a drink with more than 4% alcohol ...

And what about CARLSBERG? I just like it ...

I think you have closed your eyes to the New World; Meise...
I also prefer central (and Western ~; as Belgium is my No 1 by light years) European beer:
But I believe wonderful things has happened
the last decade with American beer culture in general and
with small breweries in particular...
Hell; even Swedish beer (at least some 5-6-7-8 labels/brands)
- at least from some smaller breweries - is beginning to taste
like beer and no longer like horse´s piss.

I like strong beer & strong coffee.
But I also like less stronger ale & middle-strong pilsner.
GFotta be middle to be real pilsner, right.

But I want my ale around 5% & the pilsners rather
not exceed 4% volume percent.

personally, for my the best "lager beer" is Jupiler and Grimbergen on draft, hmmmmmmmmmmm you have to taste it from draft

indeed Westvleteren is a "rare" beer, the "Westvletern Moncs" only brew the amount they need in order to cover production cost and allowing them to "live" (eat and drink) and then they stop, sadly it's becoming a hype and everyone wants to get Westvleteren,
last time, about one month ago, there was a traffic jam for more then 10km as they sell "on house" , imagine, a traffic jam to get beer, only happens in Belgium LOL !!

- Sounds fine.
Was going to Prague meself this autumn, but didnt have the
time nor the dough. Now I have stronger reasons than before.

Some Augustiner would be nice.

Would you like me to post some Swedish weissbier back?
And maybe some slightly bitter pilsner a la Czech-type from
my region of mid-Sweden (Zeunerts & Sundsvalls Öl).
If you pack a good amount of bottles/cans or whatever its poured in
Or I can send you a half frozen steak of reindeer?
Or, better, a large smoked & dried reindeer ribbon?

You really shouldn't buy into the Bud and Miller myth of American beer. They suck!

Some great American beers:

Victory Golden Monkey (Tripel style) - 9.5% alcohol

Rogue Shakespeare Stout - 6%

Great Divide Denver Pale Ale - 5.70%

Not:

Budweiser? - 5%

Carlsberg Pilsner? -5%

A really good American brew is dark, malty, and highly hopped. I love Belgians when I want something on the sweet side, but beer should be well-balanced and many American micros do it well. They're not available everywhere here and doubt they are readily available overseas. You'll do yourself a disservice not trying the better ones.
