Esquire Rolling Stones US LPs Ranked

Some funny and decent observations in this one, one of the better discography reviews I've read in quite a while. Perhaps the best point of their long career, which starts the article, is this:

Like a lot of 20th-century bands still releasing music in the early part of the 2000s, The Rolling Stones have a problem of inverse longevity: The longer they exist, the less essential their new output is.

A tired and pointless exercise — as tired and pointless and cliche-ridden as the late-period albums these writers invariably put down.

So, no England’s Newest Hitmakers?

That and DECEMBER'S CHILDREN (AND EVERYBODY'S).

Yeah, GasLightStreet I forgot about December’s Children. So, how are we to take this list seriously?

Flowers? Or do they consider that a compilation?

"As we say in England, it can get a bit trainspottery"

It has 2 tracks on it that are on US BUTTONS so it's a comp.

Predictable criticism going from supposedly bad to grandiosely good. Why bother. The rolling stones music is great and we know it.
I love all of their records.

You can say that again.

Mops, just to make sure, I was being quite serious, I am with you.

So... I guess I am weird too. I could put on any Stones record and eventually
my mouth would be smiling and my feet would be moving... on their own, like magic.

Some say it the DMM Devils Music Magic that does it. I say it's only rock and roll

More click bait from someone who wants to come across as a (Stones) hipster but is really yesterday's papers. There's some interesting points made, but a lot of it makes you want to step careful from where the horses passed by.

The rolling stones music for me is a categorie on its own. I am not interested in judging it because I respect the rolling stones a lot. I am interested in the sounds and noises they make as a band. I am not bored by it after all those years and hours listening to anything they have made. It is the only band that has that effect on me. I love Rockandroll music but the Stones are very special and unique.
I can't wait to see them again very soon.
Rockandroll,
Mops

Lists like this trend towards the critically acclaimed and slammed and what's culturally (generally) accepted as their best work, hence the top 5 being the usual albums, with STICKY FINGERS being #1. If it was based on sales it would look completely different.

Never read anything more wrong than what they write about "Dirty Work". They must be just sitting on their ears (or maybe they are just deaf).

I'm sure you have. You always do. There's color blindness and then there's, I guess, listening cluelessness.

... so what do you think of their review of one of your favorite albums (Undercover)?

I find it hilarious.

At the time it seems the band liked UNDERCOVER.

I think Mick has done an incredible job. I think he's taken quite a leap forward, lyric-wise, on this album.

Keith

(On Undercover) the songs are much stronger. I think Mick's come up with some good sort of lyrics and his VOICE sounds great on it. And there's also - there's a good feel to it. I think Mick and Keith have done really well on this album. The only fault I've got against it is again they've spent MUCH too long mixing the bloody thing. And, as a result, the actual sound of the instruments is a little bit harder and cold, whereas when they're still in the early stages, when they're just basic tracks, to me a lot of those things sound better.

Mick's vocals on Undercover rank with his career-best imho.

I'd say overall this list and rankings are pretty good, though Tattoo You and Undercover are a bit low, Undercover considerably so, and Steel Wheels and Blue and Lonesome a trifle high.

Still, not a bad overall assessment, though missing a couple of US released albums on the list is a glaring example of shoddy workshipman. (see how I did that?)

These type of lists are always grounds for great arguments among fans
who have such deep relationships with all of the catalog.
here and there amidst the opinions there's a good line or two but it's one
person's opinion and experience. The pleasant part of this for me was
seeing Buttons admired and making it to a high number in his piece.
