Keith's solo albums - forgotten masterpieces
Posted by: Ringo ()

Keith's solo albums seem to me to be forgotten masterpieces. The atmosphere is so relaxed, it puts you in a good mood, and makes you enjoy the good music, e.g. "You Don't Move Me" and "Demon". This is not a snipe at Mick, I hate it when people underrate him.

who's forgotten them? I remember both.

Good, but from the little journalists have written about the solo albums, it seems like they are underrated. As I understand, Exile was underrated when it was released, but later on "discovered". The solo albums also deserve a "discovery"!

Yes, they are truly masterpieces. For me it's his own "exile", but that's just me....

Love both! (Main Offender a little more)
I saw the original US vinyl version this week-end in a collector shop.
Anyone can tell me how it "rates" vs. the US CD? (sonics)

Good music, but seems like whenever I listen to them I think, "man that needs a good Jagger vocal".

exactly there not forgotten, I personally like main offender the most especially Hate it when you leave, I remember him playing it in concert in 1992? I was there with my now exgirlfrien and it was soooo cool, those memories make it extra special, but such a nice piece of work, deep groovy songs, with passion and energie. but Talk is cheap is also super, make no mistake is such a good song.I often wish that that wouldve became a real stones album, it would have been one of their best. If they didnt had that break after dirty work but would have carried on it would have been so.

both a are very good , lots of great songs i prefer "Main Offender " ,just a bit more the "talk" i often wonder if richards and jagger would have combined there talents on a stones a album with all the material instead of doing there solo stuff what it would have produced??? btw i was lucky enough to see the winos in denver i believe it was 91 or 92 ...was a great show....the version of Gimme Shelter was outstanding!!! one of the best conerts i have seen ,in my top 5!!!

like both of keiths solo recordings....999 has a killer riff!!!...but some of them strike me as being half-stoned without the mick-ster

I still listen to these a lot too. I'm with everyone else, "Hate it when you leave" is great.

Also, I love how he played "Something Else" on the 2nd Winos tour. That's my favorite Eddie Cochran song, I was pretty psyched about that.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

yeah - Something Else was just a killer way to open the show, Cindy. The Stones flirted with this ol' Cochran gem on their '78 Woodstock rehearsals, if you haven't heard that....

They are enjoyable for a change of pace, however "masterpiece" is an exaggeration.

Is it any good? I'd like to hear Mick singing that one.

unfortunately, the vocal is very distant on the extant recording....

Hate It When You Leave is the best song Keith has written in the last two decades

Masterpieces or not masterpieces? To me, Keith's solo albums are among the best albums, from all artists, the last 30 years. Keith's style is so unpretentious, it's easy to underrate him. But that is also one of the reasons he is so good.

Agree, Gazza; and if we say a good quarter of a century
his three best are: "Hate It When You Leave",
"All About You" & "This Place Is Empty".

is that supposed to be a compliment?

Eileen is a wonderful track. Great vocals, great guitar and truly a Keith tune (can't imagine Jagger singing it) like Happy.

I could have said it often seems like the ONLY song he's written in the last two decades

But I'm counting the songs of his that Mick sings as well, of course.

I like both of Keith's solo albums a lot. I just think that particular song would have been a highlight of any Stones album that it might have been included on. Its certainly better than anything Mick OR Keith wrote for the Stones album that followed it (Voodoo Lounge)

Are you sure that you've thought this Thru and Thru?

yes

Thru & thru is a fine song, too, however

Hate It When You Leave would have fitted right into the Holland-Dozier-Holland or Barrett-Strong Motown canon just nicely, however

Talk is Cheap got tremendous press and great reviews when it came out. Critics destroyed primitive cool and jagger's tour never got off the ground. Keith's tour kicked ass. some of the best shows he's ever done.

I am partial to Talk is Cheap, more variation and better playing from the wino's and guests.

Voodoo Lounge would have been a better (or even great) album if Mick and Keith used some of the better solo songs with the Stones. Imagine this "Wandering Voodoo Offender" line-up. (Wandering Spirit may be the best "stones" material in the '90s. So it's hard to cut out some of Mick's songs.)

You Got Me Rocking
Sweet Thing
Love Is Strong
Don’t Tear Me Up
The Worst (maybe use as a b-side?)
Use Me
Out of Tears
I Go Wild
Eileen
Hate It When You Leave
Moon Is Up
Evening Gown
Blinded By Rainbows
Hang On To Me Tonight
Wicked As It Seems

Norman,

What a cool idea. I LOVE Wandering Spirit! So many good songs, Evening Gown, Hang On To Me Tonight. Just need to add Hard Woman from She's the Boss and it would be even better.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Both of these albums were excellent studio releases. They are to my ears very well mixed. Very warm Stax-like sound. Tight arrangements. The Winos were a great band and the boots say the tours that supported both records were loaded with solid material. Keith was soooo loose on those tours and this spilled over to the band. I think Ivan Neville was actually overly loose/ loaded on the Main Offender tour, but the band played great anyway. Gazza made a good point on Hate it When You Leave. What a soulful number that one was live. Keith played this wonderful solo that carried on a little longer early in the tour. Something Else as the opener on the Main Offender Tour was also very special. I saw 6 Winos shows over the 2 N. American tours. A big highlight was getting in to the taping of the PBS TV show done in Chicago. I have never seen Keith so relaxed and laughing it up with the band and the audience. Shaking hands, signing autographs. This was also the loudest I ever heard Keith play when the Winos came back to play Whip it Up as an encore. Took 2 days for my ears to come back to normal. Forgotten masterpices, only by those who don't like good music. I think the vinyl for both albums is superior to the cd sound, but that's up to individual taste and the quality of audio components being used.

Thanks filstan!
I will grab 'em as soon as I see the old vinyl around again! Because I hate the sound of the TiC CD! The MOff CD isn't so bad though.
