James James aka Privettricker is THE guy to go to when it comes to playing Stones right.

He doesn't claim that nor is that his intent.

He mistakenly thinks The Lantern was recorded using open E.

He plays the opening licks of Sympathy solo wrong.

Etc.

Not that it matters.

Hey. This thread is coming back to life because I found a guy you HAVE to check out on YouTube. He’s called tokabilitor, and he has some amazing MT lessons.

I’ve noticed Taylor tried to mimic the tone and licks of a lap steel. Not all the time, but songs like “Soul Survivor”, “Going Down To Mexico”, maybe “Never Fall In Love Again”.

Richards is easy to pick out because he really never uses much vibrato in his slide playing.

Did Keith play slide o Till The Next Goodbye and Ventilator Blues?

Keith is not my favourite slide player but he's good enough to do the job within a Rolling Stones context.

Next Goodbye, yes. Taylor plays the acoustic guitar with some melodic runs.

There are a few slide guitar parts on Ventilator. The main riff on electric guitar sounds like Richards, while another guitar—possibly a resonator on the basic tracks—sounds like Taylor. Of course, Taylor’s part is down in the mix as was common practice during Exile. There is also an acoustic guitar playing chords (Richards) and the lead guitar overdubbed by Taylor.

So what? That’s a fan site, not gospel. I’ve listened to the track filtered and the counter rhythm doesn’t sound like Richards at all.

Why isn’t the quote from 1973 by Taylor on there?

The question was whether Richards played slide on the track. You know perfectly well that he did that. Happy Christmas! smiling smiley

Highly questionable statement, unless of course you have some original tracking notes squirreled away somewhere.

1) The nature of recording in the 70’s meant that the band tracked together, as a band. So there’s the likelihood Taylor is playing on the basic tracks, which his lead guitar part doesn’t seem to be played until the very end. So unless he just waited to come in at the very end, or they mixed him out until the end, it’s too hard to say.

2) Taylor received a writing credit for the song and is on record saying it’s his riff. So he just sits out the basic recording of a song he wrote the riff for? Odd.

3) The slide guitar I’m specifically talking about—either a resonator or clean Tele—sounds like Taylor’s playing. More specifically, it sure doesn’t sound like Richards.

I’m not saying it isn’t possible that Richards took Taylor’s riff, recorded the basic tracks with just Watts and Wyman, and also overdubbed parts that don’t necessarily sound like him. I just think it’s more likely Taylor played his riff on the song (which he received writing credit for) during basic tracking, and Richards had the fellows place it much lower in the mix.

There are two slide guitar rhythm parts though.
