All I recall about Prince was he was an extra add on who was an unknown who showed up wearing what looked like Ladies Lingerie I recall, but when I google pics now I see him in an overcoat - maybe my memory is shot at almost 60..

Thanks Hairball- that shot of Keith wearing a sleeveless shirt reminds me of the image cemented in my mind when the moon started to rise over his shoulder through the Coliseum concrete turnstile pillars as he played. Can't recall the song but will never forget the image and how it was likely accented my my timing my buzz from drinking beers all day to right about that moment.
Seeing the pics of the size of the crowd and recalling those large stadium shows gets me excited to think this is on schedule to happen again, be it almost 40 years later and with them in their mid 70s. The phenomenon of the Rolling Stones is really quite amazing and most of us have been right in the thick of it in many ways, from the outside in, and on occasion from the inside out.
The PPV Hampton Roads show was also quite cool. I remember the back stage footage being the first glimpse ever into their world for me, and many years later meeting Freddy and remembering him from that footage and knowing his legendary status and friendship with Keith was surreal. He was the only reason I got into the Double Door show, but thats another thread and story in itself. I also remember how Keith and Lonesome George were trading some quick licks and then Keith seemed to do what we've seen him do a few times when people wore out their welcome in his presence, i.e. Axl Rose one time on stage I also recall being given the thumb, tried to find video links to those memories on You Tube but couldn't...but like many Stones memories as I approach my 60th BD, they're etched in my head.
They were awful in the LSTNT video. Throughout the tour they played too fats and everything was muddled. They took the nuance out of most of their songs. I know I am correct on this because my memory lines up with the crowd reactions throughout the tour which you can see on the videos. Great anticipation to see them and then disappointment when you realized it was not what it was built up to be.Quote

Clearly the Stones had some rust to work out at the start of the tour, but it's hard to come away with anything negative after seeing/hearing the Hampton video/audio or even the LSTNT film. I would love to see them play that well again. Keith was always on and Bill was amazing. We just don't get that walking bass feel anymore with Daryl.

I agree with you about Hampton that they were pretty good but we don't know what the crowd heard. That is never talked about enough.

I didn't care for this one. I thought the '78 tour was one of their best (very loose, natural), but for this one they seemed like they were just doing a job. It felt to me they were a product. Course I was 19 that year and a bit cynical. I think Mick sensed something was wrong but Keith was intent on bulldozing along.

Good that you know you are correct. Audiences were very excited at the 14 shows I attended, including both Hampton shows which sounded terrific. Maybe they were more bored/stoned in the back of the stadiums/arenas. They did play incredibly fast at times (coke induced?). Makes me laugh at the current thread complaining about them playing too fast now. LSTNT has its moments like ADTL, but even that is egregiously edited.

OK whatever . . . I'm not sure what your point is. Was the band not playing well or is it just that the audiences were too blasé? For sure there were many who were unfamiliar with the new songs from Tatoo You, waiting for their favorite hits.Quote

There are videos of the tour and the audiences are dead. That backs up what I remember and what I am saying and what everyone I knew at the time was saying. Just look at the dead audience in the LSTNT movie. I have not seen it in a while but i still remember that it was almost embarrasing how dead the crowd was. Look at the crowd during Black Limo ( love the song ) for example. You got Mick in front of thousand of people and he is having no effect at all except a polite cheer at the end of songs. If anyone has it post it.
Here is another one. Dead crowd by the end of the first song. It was like that throughout the tour.

Hit both shows in Seattle w J Geils Band (and Greg Kihn band replacing Prince)
Great shows that I had the pleasure of attending with my older brother (RIP) who had turned me on to the Stones at a very young age, and who I then turned on to J Geils Band.
My two favorite bands of all time ... pure bliss.
Both the Stones and Geils rocked the Kingdome, remember seeing a pic in the paper after the shows of Mick in semi-disguise riding the elevator down to catch the Geils set from the crowd. To this day, my favorite opening band of any Stones show I've been at.
Good times indeed.

My first time seeing the Stones was at both of the L.A. Coliseum shows - fantastic!

I remember watching my friends back then, observing and chuckling how it seemed they were just jaw droppingly mesmerized. I too usually just stand and stare rather than gesticulate wildly, maybe tap my foot to Charlie's snare.
Reminds me of British audiences in years gone by. I think they are more demonstrative now, but I attended many amazing UK rock shows in the 80's where the crowd just sat and politely clapped at the end of each song. Of course now it's annoying to be seeing the shows through a sea of arm-extended cell phones and people chattering though entire songs. I guess, being an old fart, I liked the respectful audiences.
