Ron Woods Guitar Playing

In the last weeks I heard some studio outtakes boots like "The Woodstock Rehearsals" or "Back in the USA" or "Jamming with Stew". You can hear Ronnie doing a phantastic guitar work (especially in the different Blues Jams). So he did on "It's a Gas in Paris" all over, the complete soundboard recording of the live gig in Paris 1976 (The version of YCAGWYW is the best I know). He didn't fall short to Mick Taylor not only as rhythm-guitarist but in solos too. But the last tour he was playing an extended guitar solo, was in the 81/82. Except the solo on "Can You Hear me Knocking" on the last tour of course. I wonder why he seems to have lost his extraordinary abilities in the last decades. I

I think he is still playing well overall. He has slipped some and makes some obvious blunders, but most of his stuff still kicks ass. I hope they let him be part of the initial recording sessions on the next album instead of relegating him to sideman status again like they did on ABB.

I love Ronnie -- the man who kept the Stones alive during the bad old days of the 70s and 80s. His contributions will ultimately be understood as more of a backstage morale builder and peacekeeper rather than as a performer, but he DOES have his moments of brilliance.

The Stones owe more to Ronnie than anyone on this board realizes -- this is exactly why Mick J has been so supportive of him through the years. "On banana, Ronnie Wood!"

I just wonder why Woody's guitar playing was much more stellar when he played with the Faces and on Rod Stewart's early solo albums. Say what you will -- I give the man credit for rejuvenating the Stones following Mick T's departure with his attitude and carefree spirit, but the man's musicianship really did take a nosedive when he joined the Stones -- for WHATEVER reason (I don't claim to know what the reason is).

the man does get lots of credit for past contributions. but he clearly lost his way about 20 years - he's worked at learning some new licks, but he can't play what he used to play, that is abundantly clear. root like hell for the boy, but I've given up hoping he'll return to even a shadow of his former greatness.

I don't know, he sounded pretty hot to me on the Columbus bootleg. You just have to skip forward when they get to Shattered smiling smiley

Yes, I know, he has his moments of brilliance, for example on "Break the Spell" from the "Steel Wheels" Album, where he is playing bass. Yes I think that he has an extraordinary talent for music, particularly for the blues, but the moments of brilliance are very seldom.
