Janis, Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry and Joan Jett are my favorites. Of course there's more great ones.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Pet(ula) Clark of "Downtown" fame.

What I`m advocating has some common features with easy listening, although I`m no fan of James Last. In such a view there`s no room for neither Joni Mitchell nor Tina Turner, but leave that to me. To each his own. Some people don`t seem to have a listener`s ear, like myself before I got hooked. To them, a lot of stuff just sounds like some bland la-la-la; too subtle. It helps to have lived at the time the music was around, at least as a child.

Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin.
Both by a countrymile ahead.
Then there is Janis Joplin to complete the trio.
