Greatest Contribution to a Stones Album by a Non band member

I was listening to BS and thinking about how much I identify Bobby's solo with that song, almost to say they couldn't have done it (better) any other way. In your mind what are the top five contributions to a song that have been added by a Non-member of the Stones?

Jimmy Miller on Happy
Ron Wood on IORR

And on the other side of the coin . . .

Keith Richards: on the mid-70s albums
"The problem (with the Stones' mid-70s albums), which I was ignorant of for a long time, was studio musicians and sidemen taking over the band. The real problem with those albums was the band was led astray by brilliant players like Billy Preston. We'd start off a typical Stones track and Billy would start playing something so @#$%&' good musically that we'd get sidetracked and end up with a compromised track. THAT made the difference."

Nicky, Jimmy Miller and Bobby Keys are so important, but two special mentions for:

Merry Clayton on "Gimme Shelter"
and
Sonny Rollins on "Slave" and "Waiting On A Friend"

Definitely Nicky Hopkins on No Expectations. Also, the London Bach Choir on YCAGWYW. Jimmy Miller and Rocky Dijon on Can't You Hear Me Knocking and yes, Merry Clayton on Gimme Shelter. Thankfully, nobody has mentioned Biz Markie's rap on Anybody Seen My Baby. Ooooohhhh the horror!!!!! Oops, I just did. All apologies everybody.smiling smiley

Flaco Jimenez plays accordion on Sweethearts Together. And doesn't he play on B2B too? I miss his input on ABB.

I'd go with Nicky Hopkins' piano work on the entire 'Beggars Banquet' album. Just superb.

the trickle of piano notes on the intro to "Monkey Man" by Nicky Hopkins....add the bass and it equals simple and magic atmosphere...and keeps climbing when guitar & tamborine come in.....BRILLIANT ARRANGEMENT!!!

Of course the solo on the Atlantic City 89 bootleg is the better one, because there it is in full length ...

Jack Nitzsche deserves alot of credit. 40 Licks lists him as piano on Let's Spend The Night and choral arrangements on YCAGWYW. He also played harpsichord on Lady Jane and piano on several other songs in the mid 60's, mostly from the LA RCA Studio sessions.

I can't believe no-one has mentioned the great Al Perkins on Torn and Frayed!

Billy Preston: Now here you can argue all day. Whilst many remember Billy for his influence on B&B (Melody), I like to think of his playing on Heartbreaker and 100 Years Ago. Billy and Mick T more or less made that album. And how about his sound on Fingerprint File? - almost sounds like a guitar. (Someone else has mentioned I Got the Blues). Never underestimate the GOOD stuff Billy did with the Stones!
