well this don't have a Stones connection that I'm aware of; tho I am sure
they all know who Elizabeth Cotton was. She fingerpicks bass on acoustic that is unrelentin,
WHILE playing lead, and offering rhythm hits here and there. !
Or, a little 'line' to feature the next coming chord.
I bought my first thumbpick last Tuesday. the first in my life,
after watching "Freight Train" videos of her and others last Monday. Doing well with the bass parts, not perfect but pretty solid; the other stuff I'm not up to yet.

so what? trains are very common in blues songs (and lots of other songs)

the train metaphor is so important because it works for at least three complexes:
a. the train takes a lover away (or brings her back)
b. the train works as a metopher for life (moving on + tracks)
c. the train as a metaphor for getting away and breaking free (for example: People Get Ready)

The Rolling Stones say that trains are a gas!

Rolling Stone Mick Jagger showed his support for our campaign to improve the region’s rail services when he took a wry dig at Northern.

The legendary musician played with his band at Manchester United’s Old Trafford Stadium last night.

As reported by our colleagues at the Manchester Evening News, joking with the 50,000 fans he had a little dig at Northern Rail. Jagger said: “We’re leaving you tomorrow. We're catching the Northern train to Edinburgh. Hope we get there.”

It prompted laughter from the crowd amid the ongoing rail crisis.

Yesterday, news publications across the region ran a day of action to highlight the ongoing problems with our rail services.

This concert being on my first day ever in the UK, and with a Northern train booked from Liverpool to Edinburgh two days later,
Mick's comments definitely got my attention cool smiley

Ultimately had to change train options, take a bus to a different station, resulting in a crash course in the UK train system. Overall, a great system that served me well, but not without a few hiccups. Fortunately, the Twickenham fiasco was one I dodged by booking a walkable hotel nearby. Sooo glad I did cool smiley

I'd be more likely to buy a train themed compilation album than a dreadful Christmas one (see the other thread).

For instance the songs mentioned above, plus some good covers - The Train Kept A Rolling, Stop That Train, Train in Vain etc.

It's the bloody English that developed canals, trains, started the bloody Industrial Revolution and arguably saved Western Civilization.

A compilation album about planes, trains, and automobiles would be cool. And for 595 dollars you get the deluxe edition that includes some gimmick that cost them three dollars and six cents.

And its wheels gonna take me home

And love walks out

About The Brussels Affair:

In 1973 the Rolling Stones were banned from entering France, due to run-ins with the law whilst recording Exile On Main St in Villefranche-Sur-Mer. This was a blow to the Stones’ hordes of French fans, who would potentially be excluded from experiencing the Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band In The World on their 1973 European Tour. That October, the band organized a concert in neighbouring Belgium, chartering a train from Paris to take fans and press to Brussels for two now-historic gigs.
