OT The Jayhawks

I have (had) loved The Jayhawks for about 20 years but their last studio album (Paging Mr Proust) was terrible. I hated it, I hated the sound of it.

They released a new record last week, Back Roads and Abandoned Motels. It is sensational.

Now, I am a Stones freak, and Springsteen, but track 3 on The Jayhawks new album, a song called Gonna be a Darkness may well be my favourite song EVER by anybody.

Pure emotional gold.

In the words of famed Australian music critic/guru, Molly Meldrum...do yourself a favour and have a listen.

The Bunkhouse Album? Love that one!

In fairness, Blue Earth, Hollywood Town Hall, Tomorrow The Green Grass and Rainy Day Music also are excellent.

The new album sounds very promising. It's so cool that Karen sings lead vocals on some numbers. Come Cryin' To Me and El Dorado are favourites so far from the new album thumbs up

Loved everything up to The Sound Of Lies and then kinda got bored of them, but will give this new disc a spin. I might've just needed a break from them.

Review (from Pop Matters)

«Still finding new ways to refine and expand a beloved sound, Back Roads and Abandoned Motels is, start to finish, the Jayhawks' most enjoyable record since Rainy Day Music».

Many thanks for the news about their new album. Like them a lot, besides the music I think Hollywood Town Hall has one of the best album covers.

I'm a weird kind of Jayhawks fan where I didn't get into them until Smile so that and Rainy Day Music to me are masterful albums. But to many, I guess its not seen as the lull but its certainly not seen as definitive Jayhawks. I do enjoy Tomorrow The Green Grass but otherwise never really sought out the rest. I should have seen them a couple years ago on the Rainy Day 10th or 15th anniversary tour and they were playing most of the stuff I liked. I'll check out the new album though.

I'm also a longtime fan and like the new CD too. Also of note, they are the studio backing band for Ray Davies last two Americana CDs which are also quite good.

I prefer them over Wilco. And not so OT, did no Gary play some guitar on any solo Jagger albums?

He sang and played on Evening Gown, but Mick didn't keep it..

"Blue" off of Tomorrow the Green Grass is one of my favorite songs of all time.
