RS best band with worst lyrics
Posted by: arjan ()

Apart from Street fighting man and high wire, Mick and Keith haven't written a lot of lyrics that they'll be remembered by, like Dylan, Springsteen or our dutch band De Dijk.
This is not a negative critic, just an observation.
Can't they or won't they?

There are more than only those two but they've never been as 'serious' as Dylan or Springsteen.
they don't care that much for statements, just PARTY -- IORR

Therefor Neocon was quit surprising imo

I love their lyrics.

"Well when you're sitting there in your silk upholstered chair
Talkin' to some rich folk that you know
Well I hope you won't see me in my ragged company
Well, you know I could never be alone".

'"Things are different today,"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper'.

"One time you were my baby chicken
Now you've grown into a fox
Once upon a time I was your little rooster
But am I just one of your cocks".

"Yeah I'm sitting here thinking just how sharp I am
I'm a necessary talent behind every rock and roll band".

I don't listen to the Stones for deep meaning songs. They are not "thinking mans" rock.

They've had quite a few good and meaningful lyrics over the years, but yeah, most of their lyrics aren't serious, just about partying and screwing and having a good time. That's why we love them so.

I think Jagger is a criminally underrated lyricist. Far better than Springsteen. OK he seldom matches up to Dylan at his best, but who does?

Lyrical greatness is entirely in the ear of the beholder

I dont agree that the Stones are primarily just about 'partying'. I think that does them a disservice, to be perfectly honest.

Plenty of Stones' lyrics down the years that have nothing to do with their hedonistic reputation have struck a personal chord with me . Including some of the ones on their new record.

You're f'n kidding right?

Gimme Shelter
SFTD
SFM
JJF
Satisfaction (I Can't Get No) . . . the lyric for a generation
Moonlight Mile
Tumbling Dice
Honky Tonk Woman
Ruby Tuesday
Bitch
and most appropriately, IORR

And that's not even to mention

MR (blues genius)
BOB (pop genius)
BTMMR (Keith) (rebel genius)
Far Away Eyes Dead Flowers (country genius)
Respectable or Shattered (punk genius)
Let It Bleed (simply genius)
and on and on and on.

Further, one must remember that the tradition that the Stones are building upon is the blues, more than folk (Dylan and Springsteen build more upon folk in my estimation), and by that Standard the Stones use of metaphor, wordplay, rhyme and metre is unmatched by any other rock'n'roll blues-based band. Hell, even the name of the band is to be forever remembered. Yes, their writing abilities start with the name of the band. The Band and E Street doesn't come close, with all due respect to Messengers Dylan and Springsteen.

Folk on the other hand, often demands lyrics of social consciousness, and hence more readily available lyrics that are quickly understood to be deemed "important" because they are about "important" subjects. Consider the Byrd's Time Time Time as an premier example of this (even though they didn't write the words).

Meanwhile the Stones deal with the very earthy, secular subjects of the blues, but in a way that no other band had before or likely will again.

Are the Rolling Stones a circle of poetesses?

The one line "I can't get no satisfaction" will be remembered a long time after all the Dylan and Springsteen elaborates have sunken into oblivion. They have written the anthem. If you wanta read poetry go home into your bed alone. This is rock'n'roll, baby. You gotta listen to it and DANCE! And you'll never @#$%& alone anymore.

Lyrics! Ha.

Same here. I'm in it for the musical aspects, not the intellectual aspects.

I'm shocked really. I'm not saying all of their hundreds of songs have special lyrics, but to me there's no one who writes them better than Jagger. No one else could have written Sympathy for instance. Wild Horses is pure poetry. Tons of other exmples. Midnight Rambler is a masterpiece.

Too bad, to me the intellectual aspects and the Stones' (Jagger's) obvious sophistication is one of the main reasons to love them. Simple as that.

Dylan sure has written lots of great lyrics, but check out the lyrics to "Wiggle, Wiggle and you'll realize that even bard's have their off-days.

Gimme a break, is this thread for real? Jagger/Richards not great lyric writers?
Dylan has had some great stuff but that's like compairing apples and oranges. Time Waits for No One people, find something tangible to talk about.

They have perfect lyrics to match the songs, which is all that matters. A certain type of feel in the use of words. There are some embarassing throwaway lines through the years, just like embarassing throwaway music at times. Jagger (and Richards) are criminally underrated as wordsmiths though and I think time will show their classic period to be pure lyrical poetry, straight from the heart and street.

What the hell would highwire be remembered for? The lyrics sound stupid to me> Its a piss poor attempt by Mick to politically sound off and be noble. I love mick as a performer but he has a cloak full of ego and greed. So I cannot take him seriously on any world issue. I dont care what any celebrity's view is. I just want to see them perform and shut the F%^# Up.

"Smart" and "simple" aren't mutually exclusive.

Can you think of a better song than "Stand By Me?" Or "Love In Vain?" Think about how devastating "Love In Vain" is in, what, four lines? Five? So pure, so elegant...

I'm a huge Dylan fan, but a lot of the self-consciously "poetic" stuff can stray into the land of wordy foolishness..."Stuck Inside Of Mobile," for instance, represents a very specific phase of Dylan and has not, I don't think, aged nearly as well as many of the Stones' best lyrics. And I suspect Dylan would agree with that idea.

"Satisfaction" (though famously dismissed by Dylan at the time) is an incredible lyric. Twisting a Muddy Waters idea into a spitting, funny critique of advertising, consumer culture and badly timed menstrual cycles? It's amazing and all the better for its grit and directness.

"...I am sleeping under strange, strange skies"

Good God. Don't ever let anyone--least of all a Springsteen fan (and he has had his moments)--tell you that Jagger doesn't come up with incredible lyrics...

"I can still paint the town/All the colors of your evening gown/While I'm waiting for your blond hair to turn grey..."

"Who's that woman on your arm/All dressed up to do you harm?"

How about the lyrics to "Paint It, Black?" "Street Fighting Man?" "Waiting On A Friend?" "Out of Control?" Every single song on "Some Girls?"

Even after you dock Jagger huge points for garbage like "Rock And A Hard Place" and "Neo Con," he's still a giant as a lyricist.

Bollocks.

Nobody listens to music for the lyrics.

I can't understand 1/2 of what Jagger says and I couldn't care less.

If you want lyrics read poetry.

And spare me the Dylan crap. His popularity is due to the fact that he is such a wierdo that nobody admits that they don't understand him.
