Stones Should Open With Rough Justice

That would show some confidence in the new album, and it'd be a nice change-up from SMU, and with SMU out they could bring in another tune, maybe even another tune from ABB some point later in the concert.

They did it in Toronto.

It all sounds so feckin' logical in my head.

Makes sense... besides, everyone is so going so freaking nuts at the opening anyway they probably wouldn't mind what they opened with...

I agree.
Shove the new album in peoples' faces and make them take notice.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

open with Rough Justice
was just my thought exactly when I listened to the album
this morning on my way to work

and do Rain Fell Down instead of Miss You
on the way to the b-stage

I agree too. Great song. Cool opener.

There's just one small problem....

Rough Justice IS NOT that great of a live song, in it's current arrangements... the Stones aren't gonna open with some sub-standard number that isn't even exciting the fans who are hearing it live.

The song itself is excellent and theoretically it would be a great choice as opener

However, as BornOnTheBayou (could he be CreedenceLives under another name?) rightly says, its not quite that great live as yet. Mick still seems to have some problems getting the right key in any version I've heard so far

Granted, but they should be able to figure that out over the week off. SMU is simply too much taken for granted, and almost cliched as an opening song. I think the Stones realized that and dealt with it fairly well with the Licks tour when they continually traded off the SMU opening slot with SFM and a few others.
So now they simply need to get it together, elevate RJ to opener status with a little bit more bite in the guitars, Mick's gotta own it right out of the gate, and Woody's gotta bring something more on the slide. I think if they did those things, it could work.
Besides, if fans got excited about TD being left out, just how excited would they be if SMU and another warhorse were put out to pasture to make room for the new album?

Mick and Keith, this one's over to you. You can do it again in Toronto, I'll be watching smiling smiley

As BV has been to ALL the shows so far, I would like to know his opinio about this tread.

Are you there BV???

camper, there are six songs in that set from ABB. Way more than what they have been doing. I wish they would do something like that kind of set. It would give a nice mix of new stuff, 60's stuff, some rare treats and would still please the casual fan. I would have thrown some stuff in from the 80s but I wanted to be a little bit realistic even though that set would never happen anyway.

Oh God, you'll get no argument from me on replacing Start Me Up. The song has been played to death let alone as an opener

Actually, I think it wasnt used THAT much as an opener on Licks. Street Fighting Man was normally the arena opener and Brown Sugar in the stadiums. I saw them open with SMU at a couple of arena shows, but only towards the end of the tour

yeah vegas used smu as opener it was the last us show of the licks tour

I know Start Me Up is a classic but talk about playing a song to death. Not only by them at shows but commericals, radio stations, sporting events. You name it. Would love it if the Stones had some balls and put a new song at the end with all the warhorses. Start Me Up was the last time they did this in 81.

Here's what they should do...

Open with Rough Justice. The crowd will go nuts no matter what. When that finishes, THEN play Start Me Up. I can tell you the crowd would be into it, thats for sure.

I'm really surprised with the opinions in this thread. At every Stones concert I've been to the excitement builds to incredible heights when the lights go out and the intro music starts. If the Stones popped out on stage and played anything other than a major warhorse the excitement of 75% of the people in the stadium would drop of a ten thousand foot cliff and never recover. People would be thinking "who the f*** did that song and why are the Stones singing it?" or "why did I pay $300 to come here"? or "is this another opening band"?

As far as Start Me Up being overworked, maybe that's because it's such a classic. It has the same recognition factor as Jumping Jack Flash, and is probably the best possible choice for an opener.

I take your point, but is there precedent for this: where fans said "WTF" with a new tune opening the show? Or are there tour examples where they did open with a new tune that really rocked, the obvious exception being when SMU was introduced?

I can think of dozens of other artists who've done exactly this, particularly when their new album has been out for a while or when audiences expected or weren't fazed by a curveball from the artist.

I agree, it's a classic and it's been a great choice for opening almost anything. But still I wonder, could we do with a change? And would RJ work for this tour?

It would have been a good choice to open with Rought Justice if it would have been the new single (in stead of Rough Justice). Opening with RJ would show that he Stones still have confidence in their new releases...

I disagree. The excitement level at any Stones concert (or any concert by any band) is at its most fevered when the artist initially hits the stage

The Stones could play "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" as an opener and it would still be enough to get most people out of their seats

Yes no doubt when I saw RJ on ABC it was the best the Stones has done in a long time live. What a fresh opening rather than SMU.

It'll never happen, cause Mick insists on telling the audience the title of every new or rare song before it is played.

In Europe I think they will open with it, at least in some countries.
Money (and charts) talks.

RJ would be the best choice for an opener right now. They need to let the audience know they are still kicking ass and not just relying on old hits to go on tour. RJ kicks ass and so do they.

I agree. In fact, think my favorite opener is "Let It Rock," from '78. Just a couple of minutes long, and no one seems too put off not knowing the song.
