Thank you for this thread! I have great memories of BtB, the decent album and the great tour. Keith Richards was in fantastic shape in that time, as were MicK Jagger and Charlie Watts.Ronnie Wood had problems, but the band rolled.

I think it's a great album, but how sad to think that we only had 2 studio albums in 20 years! (3 if you count the covers album).

1. "Flip the Switch"
2. "Anybody Seen My Baby?"
3. "Low Down"
4. "Already Over Me"
5. "Gunface"
6. "You Don't Have to Mean It"
7. "Out of Control"
8. "Saint of Me"
9. "Might as Well Get Juiced"
10. "Always Suffering"
11. "Too Tight"
12. "Thief in the Night"
13. "How Can I Stop"

Bought it when it came out. I remember being disappointed and didn't listen to it very much.
Recently brought it back into rotation for an 12-hour drive there and back and reviewed it again:
-- Flip the Switch is a great song, as good as anything they have done. The lyric is chilling in a real way and the music is well executed. Love this song but it's not something you can spin repeatedly.
-- You Don't have to Mean it is catchy and has great vocals, front and backing.
-- Thief is a song that I appreciate more now than 20 years ago. Along with How Can I Stop, these strike me as truly complex, grownup music. I think if Keith had truly gone solo and been able to discipline himself, we would have more songs like these.
-- Saint of Me: Good song. Shows what Mick can do when he is inspired.
-- Too Tight. Good rocker.
-- Anybody Seen My Baby: OK, understand why it was the single.
Everything else is sort of filler. Mick's singing is too affected and the 'experimental' songs are just tricked up filler.
The guitars are good, but Ronnie, as always, need to assert himself more. Drumming is good. I was prepared to dislike the bass but it helps the good songs and not the bad songs, so it was fine.

In listening I decided to accept the production as is.

Agree! Glad someone else loves it, I was felling like the only one. To me, it's a brilliant track!

Has not aged well. Love You Don't Have to Mean It, One of those Stones albums I don't think I even own anymore. In fact I never have the desire to put on any Post-Wyman Stones albums, even there is the scattered great song here and there. I take that back, I've been listening to Blue and Lonesome, and it's pretty damn good. But BTB, although I liked about half of it when it came out, is kind of a clinker now. Maybe younger fans like it?

Yes. It has really grown on me. More things happening than meets the ear on both listen. Wonderful work by Bernard and whoever else is singing there.

gunface, you dont have to mean it, anybody seen my baby, already over me, flip the switch

are good.

out of control is crap

most of the rest of the album is between ok and poor filler

and saint of me is one of the worst singles ever. hate it with a passion.

felt sad when they released it, thinking that band used to be something, is this what they are reduced to.

The only song I liked when it was released was Saint of Me, and it's still the only one I would listen to now.
Yes it's a rather weak song but it's better than the rest...it has a nice groove and was fun to see live at Vredenberg.
The only true positive of this album was the tour that followed.

I was born in 1995, i got introducted to the stones by my parents. My mom was 7 months pregnant when she and my father and sister went to see a show during the Voodoo Lounge tour.

When i was maybe 4 years old i discovered stones from having from vcr tape of a french stones documentary Voodoo Lounge era, (havent seen it in a long time, i think it was a updated version of the 25x5 doc)

The only stones albums in the house back then was Stick Fingers and Bridges To Babylon. So thats the music that schooled me into the stones. So its a very special album, i find it one of their best works.

Flip The Switch - i never will forget the moment i first heard this one, looking back, the intro probably has a connection on the reason why i picked up the drums at age 5 and still do it pretty much professionally today.

Anybody Seen My Baby - One of my favourite song by anyone. its perfect.

Low Down - No idea why this song is not huge, the chorus is so damn good.

Already Over Me - Great ballad

Gunface - Not a highlight but still enjoyable

You Dont Have To Mean It - lovely laid back Keith song, Bernard does great backing vocals

Out Of Control - A great semi classic track, awesome bass line and harp work. Good live song

Saint Of Me - Great lyrics, i love the middle part with the sample going.

Might As Well Get Juiced - I loved this one as a kid

Always Suffering - Not my favorite, still a cool song

Too Tight - Never been much into this one

Thief In The Night and How Can I Stop - I only truly found these lately. Absolutely fantastic tracks. Both of them.

Last time I ever bought a Stones album on the day of its release, and I was disappointed...didn't seem like a good overall effort to me, then or now. Liked Flip The Switch, Saint of Me and You Don't Have To Mean it, but could never get into the rest of it. Was lucky enough to hear You Don't Have To Mean It live at The Wiltern in 2002, a pleasant surprise.

I rushed to buy it on the day-of-release. I felt pretty let down, it wasn't that great. 1997 wasn't a good year for music in general; rock was on its last legs.

I bought it when I came out, listened to it a few times and forgot about it.
For me B2B was much overshadowed by Bob Dylans Time Out Of Mind which came out on Sept. 30, 1997. And that one really stood the test of time!

I love this song and the guitar work on it.

One of my later day favorites, great song, they should do it live!

Indeed...I was hooked into Time Out of Mind upon first listen, and it kept sinking it's teeth into me deeper and deeper as the weeks went by.
Soundtrack for the Fall of '97 - Time Out of Mind, and is up there with the all of Dylan's very best imo.

One of my favorites too, along w/ Gunface. Agree on the great chorus, but the verses aren't bad either!

They did it live once or twice.

Nothing wrong with the verses.

Yeah the production is an issue, a little to slick for my taste, but whatever, they were searching and at the time the music industry’s formula hadn’t changed yet.

Picked it up on the release day, a tradition since Still Life

Some tunes were good in ‘97

Anybody Seen My Baby

But haven’t aged well....

Some good tunes on this one

Standouts for me

Flip the Switch

Saint of Me

And the criminally underrated Too Tight

Out of Control worked great live, but I remember when i first heard it in the studio CD, it fell kinda flat. Live though, it’s a powerhouse.

the shoot 'em dead, brainbell jangler!

BB...haven't listened to it in over a decade...I don't even know where I put the album but I miss it.

I miss my baby.

Anybody seen my baby?
