Guitarist known as J. Geils found dead in Massachusetts home
[www.wcvb.com]

"GROTON, Massachusetts —
5 Investigates has learned John Warren Geils Jr., the artist known professionally as J. Geils and part of the rock group The J. Geils Band, was found dead in his Groton, Massachusetts home.
He was 71.
Geils and the band are best known for their album, "Freeze Frame" and the song "Centerfold," which hit No. 1 for six weeks.
Geils formed the band during his time at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, where he studied mechanical engineering.
At Worcester, he formed J. Geils Blues Band with Danny Klein, Magic Dick Salwitz, Stephen Jo Bladd, and Peter Wolf, with Seth Justman becoming the last member before the band released its debut album in 1970.
The J. Geils Band was influenced by soul music and rhythm and blues, but it moved toward pop and rock by the time the album "Love Stinks" came out in 1980.
After 11 albums, the band's 12th album, "Freeze Frame," hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts for four weeks in 1981 and remained on the chart for 70 weeks. The title track "Freeze Frame" made it to No. 4.
While on tour, opening acts for the band included the Eagles, Billy Joel, ZZ Top and U2.
The band broke up a few years later.
Geils has called Groton his home for 35 years."

I'm not even a big fan but I hope thats not true. That would be very sad. Wasn't that old and was a very good guitarist.

Nooooooooooo! In the early-mid 1970s the J Geils Band was a freakin powerhouse. Saw them headline over UFO (with Schenker) in 1975 at the Cap Centre in Largo MD with an unknown Peter Frampton at the bottom of the bill. They destroyed the place. RIP J Geils. A classic American rocker......

Man, this is painful. I wore out my copies of Bloodshot, Nightmares and Blow Your Face Out when I was in school.

Time to pour a strong one and listen to Full House at full blast.

Oh Jeez...this is really sad.

Sooo many memories of listening to them in the 70's, and seeing them open for the Stones!

RIP.

Great fun band, caught their New Year's Eve shows in Worcester back in the 80's. J. Geils was the least flamboyant as a performer

Just found out. Not to read too much into this but there is a thread here and I commented on the great guitar collection in his home. To this day, I think the response was J. Geils only under a different name.

The J. Geils Band were awesome in the 70's! House parties were always Stones or J. Geils. Was great to have them on the same bill in '81! RIP J.

Cranking it to 11. thumbs up
I posted this not too long ago in the 'what are you listening to thread'
Entire song is f+king great, but that jam that begins at the half way point always makes me want to jump, shout, hoot, and holler!

yep i agree; intense and truly hot. wonderful stuff. J. held that all together too; a one guitar band...and Peter, well...he gives Mick or any of them a run for their money as a front man in his prime. maybe even now. I fell away from them when the really big hits were coming but those first fat handful of albums were so intense. they HAD to put out a live one almost right away; there was an intense demand for it.
wow that's great stuff.

Saw them every summer in the 79/80/81 timeframe at the hockey rink known as the Cape Cod Collegium....dirt parking lot that became a campground, sleep in the car for 3 days and watch them for three nights..saw them in Paris as they opened for the Stones in 1982 - i was stoked being from Boston and seeing them in France...check this little fact out that I just found...certainly they were kindred souls with the Stones with the Blues connection

07/27/82 – London, Carlton Hotel. Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bobby Keys, Peter Wolf, Jerome Geils and Seth Justman jam together, calling themselves The Carlton's.

Thanks for firing up the brain cells with Give It To Me! I don't think I have heard that tune in 25 years!!!

It is sad, but time is marching on. The earliest Baby Boomers are about 70 years old now. Just think, they were only 20 years old in 1966 and lived through the whole peace and love generation thing. The post-war baby die-off is about to kick in gear soon.

RIP, thanks for the music.

another reason to hate Jann Wenner; these guys should have been in there two decades ago.
they get nominated and refused and J. dies...
... so when it finally happens, well...sigh...

J. Geils Band opened for the Stones the first time I saw the Stones on Tour of the Americas, Cleveland, 1975. Awesome.

I'm gutted.
I used to listen Off The Record (a radio show hosted by Mary Turner) through The American Forces Network.
The end title music of that program was Whammer Jammer. It was a fond memory.
