Maybe it was American Music Awards or perhaps Don Kirshner's short-lived Rock Music Awards. At any rate, both bands had been kicking around awhile before competing at which was the best "new" act.

Wasn't their second album produced by your pal Todd Rundgren?

third album, actually- war babies smiling smiley killer record - i was talking to Todd the other day and he (after we spoke about it) was gonna go back and listen to it after decades
