For the classic early recordings ...

The Complete Early Recordings of Skip James 1930 - Yazoo 1072
Hard Time Killing Floor - Yazoo 2075 -- Remastered with better sound and includes four Son House recordings

For his later recordings from the sixties ....

Devil Got My Woman - Vangaurd
Skip James Today - Vanguard

Devil Got My Woman is best for content and sound...Today a close second
Both Sickbed Blues and Hospital Center Blues are haunting.

James was rediscovered in 1964 by Henry Vestine, Bill Barth and John Fahey;
the previous year Fahey had already rediscovered Bukka White.

There's a movie on the difficult times in the summer of 1964 called "Two Trains Runnin'"; hope it gets a DVd release, otherwise it will be difficult to watch here in Germany.
