RIP Peter Sarstedt

A dear friend has just died - Peter Sarstedt who had a world hit in 1969 with this tune. Safe journey Peter - will miss your great wit and chats.

This from the BBC.

Singer-songwriter Peter Sarstedt, best known for the song Where do you go to my Lovely?, has died at the age of 75, his family has said.
The song topped the UK singles charts in February 1969 and remained number one for four weeks.

It was number one in many other countries and won the Ivor Novello award for best song composition.

He died peacefully after a six-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a family statement said.

The statement added that his closest family were "with him to the last" and that many would miss his songs and his music.

Where do you go to my Lovely?, a song about a girl born in poverty who becomes a member of the European jet-set, was replaced as number one by Marvin Gaye's I Heard it Through the Grapevine.

Other Sarstedt songs included Beirut, Take Off Your Clothes, I am a Cathedral and Frozen Orange Juice - the latter reaching number 10 in the charts.

His music reached new audiences when Where do you go to my Lovely? was included in the Wes Anderson films Hotel Chevalier and The Darjeeling Limited, which were both released in 2007.

I still have vivid memories of one of my sisters playing where do you go to my lovely endlessly on our record player after buying the single in 1969.....
I was not a fan of it then, but it now has a place in my heart due to those memories.

Rest in Peace Peter Sarstedt

What a drag it is gettin' old

You live in a fancy apartment
Off the Boulevard of St. Michel
Where you keep your Rolling Stones records
And a friend of Sacha Distel, yes you do.

That's sad to hear his song where do you go to my lovely is always on my playlist.
Such great lyrics, now when I play his song it will be tinged with sadness.

I think I read/heard it is about Sophia Loren. Pass the wine, Sophia. Cheers, Peter.
And a note my fellow Country man: He found out that his family originally came from Sarstedt, a town in Niedersachsen/Lower Saxony (capital is Hanover).

I remember the song well, all these years since I last heard it. I'm dreading who else we will lose this year. RIP.

Sometimes a song catches the Zeitgeist of a moment in time. "Where do you go to my lovely" was indeed one of those. (Up there with "Whiter Shade of Pale").

I too have it on my permanent playlist - actually both the long and the short versions.

(I've quickly tried to check this, and failed, but my memory is trying to tell me that he was one of three brothers who each separately topped the UK singles charts. That's more than neat!)

RIP Peter.
