For years for me, The Stones are tied for second favourite with The Beatles and Steely Dan.

Of course, the Stones were my top favourite for a long time time, though.
At different times, my two other 2nd place bands might have been my top favorite for awhile...

Its weird: I see the Beatles as something besides a 'band'. So I dint even consider them when a question like this arises. They are w/o doubt the Greatest IMO.

I just happened to be seeing some clips from one of the Glastonburys of recent years. It had Mumford & Sons closing out a night. Big show; massive set. The crowd is just swaying, singing along; jubilant like only at G'bury. For the very last number they brought out the Vaccines, the Staves, Vampire Weekend, and someone else; maybe Two Door Cinema. They laid down a rousing, and I mean rousing! version of "With a Little Help From My Friends". (the Cocker arrangement).
And I tell you - it is goosebumps all the way through. Horns section, all the girls singing back-ups; powerchords.
But it showed once again that Beatles songs are universal; they belong to the human race by now. They are bigger than # 1 in the charts. Everybody knows them, all the words, no matter what age. The band had the crowd going wild up to that point, but with the Beatles number they took it over the edge.

Early Beatles up through the Rubber Soul era. Neil Young, though not always with a band, up through the Tonight's the Night era.Listening to Beatles now.

This is a tough question. The Stones have always been my favorite, without a doubt. But second favorite...? When I was young, in my 20s and probably 30s, it would have been the Beatles. But I rarely listen to the Beatles anymore, although I have close to, if not all of, their albums. I love The Who and CCR but if forced to choose, today I'd say Neil Young with Crazy Horse (or Neil Young with any damn body).

The Stones have always been my favorite. Hard to pick a second favorite. The bands I listen to right now are :

Just saw a John Fogerty show last month...cruising through CCR hits. Oh man he was good.

Yeah, I see Fogerty in concert whenever he comes to town. Always fun.
