I liked 25 X 5 by the Stones, This Is Spinal Tap because it's so damn hilarious and All You Need Is Cash by The Rutles which in my opinion is even funnier then the Spinal Tap one. Oh yeah, Four Flicks kicks ass too! The documentary part was interesting.

Dont Look Back - by a mile

Honourable mentions : The Last Waltz and Gimme Shelter

I think that next month we will have one to compare with those three when Scorsese's "No Direction Home" is released

Almost Famous is one of the greatest movies ever made with a rock'n'roll
story line.

All the best ones are mentioned. Hail Hail R n R is fantastic... I love it when Chuck is explaining a riff (from Carol I think) to Keith... at the end he says THAT'S IT KEITH!!!!

Gimme Shelter is another favorite. I'm really excited about the upcoming Dylan documentary though.
The Last Waltz is a gem as well... some great moments on there.

The Rolling Stones Rock 'n' Roll Circus.

My only major gripe about Last Waltz is that it's essentially a Robbie Robertson "showcase" - if you read Levon's account of this movie, you would be inclined to give it a couple of demerits....

The Last Waltz; worst ever.

CS Blues? Really, Ed? I mean it's about the greatest tour in history...but as a movie, it really puts me to sleep.

Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" probably the greatest concert movie ever.

Neil Young "Rust Never Sleeps" great music and unusual stage.

Woodstock and Gimme Shelter must be the two greatest rock'n'roll films ever made. Both of them captured the remarkable events that made Woodstock and Altamont to the two most legendary festivals in the history of rock. They are both so pure, honest and real.

BTW, Spinal Tap is funny.

Harder They Come, how could i forget...it's awesome - Stop Making Sense...really a fantastic film. Sadly, the DVD quality is worse than the VHS...maybe they'll correct this one day.

Anyone who says Last Waltz is the worst ever should never again talk about music...or really, anything.

Regarding Levon & the Waltz, those comments do make you watch it a bit differently. However, I disagree that it takes it down any notches. The film is just amazing. Not every performance is awesome (Canterburry Tales, Garth doing his weird space music and Neil Diamond being involved), but the film is awesome. The interviews are great & you can pick up some really hot subtle moments. You can watch Levon quietly getting pissed about Richard talking about the women on the road. Levon kinda laughs it off, but you can see he's pretty ticked at that moment. Also, watching them do Old Time Religion is just great...seeing Danko there just makes you love the guy.

SDstonesguy:

Nice call on "Old Time Religion" in "The Last Waltz." It's a beautiful moment when the rendition dissolves into their laughter and then Robbie says: "...things aren't they way they used to be..." (or somesuch).

Scorsese keeps the shot with them as Robbie's face turns a little downcast, but we're already hearing the horn intro for "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" at Winterland. It's a perfect segueway that deftly underscores the meaning of that classic. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Levon's performance of "Dixie" is fierce and definitive.

Of course, "Gimme Shelter," "Hail, Hail" and some of the others are superb.

I'll put my two cents in for Jim Jarmusch's 1997 film bio of Neil Young & Crazy Horse: "Year of the Horse."

Jarmusch caught Neil and the Horse at a pivotal moment in the life of the band--right on the heels of longtime producer/collaborator David Briggs' death. As such, there's a drama and urgency--a sense of mortality--to both the interview and performance segments that is so rare in these type of projects.

It's also funny as hell and Jarmusch's technique of cutting between 1976, 1986 and 1996 shows off the cycles in the life of the band and its gonzo relationships.

I like the idea that on any given night, all that backstory is part of the band's presence and performance. And I suspect that such a depth of history with its attendant ups and downs is something that any Stones fan can appreciate.

Surprised nobody cares for Go, Johnny Go. It has the only live video of Richie Valens (or so I've heard)...and he is doing a HOT number called "Oh, My Head".

Also, it's surprising (or maybe not, given the historical rivalry) that no one has cited "A Hard Day's Night."

Funny, very stylish and perfectly subversive.

I mean, check out an Elvis movie of that time and then pop in "A Hard Day's Night." A quantum leap forward...
