He's the master. I like his cello player. I made her laugh (I was in the front row) during the tour with Brian Wilson.

Well done. Must be hell to use that bow in a tempo like that for four minutes.thumbs up

Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck to review claims they stole incarcerated man’s poem
Song from pair’s album 18 appears to take several lines from Hobo Ben by Slim Wilson without giving credit

Representatives for Johnny Depp and Jeff Beck have said the duo will review allegations they stole lyrics from a poem by an incarcerated man on their collaborative album, 18.

The song Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade appears to take several lines from Hobo Ben, a poem and song by Slim Wilson, the alias of a self-proclaimed cheat and pimp who served time for murder and armed robbery, Rolling Stone reports.

Following publication, a spokesperson told the Guardian: “We are reviewing the inquiry relating to the song Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade on the 18 album by Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp. If appropriate, additional copyright credits will be added to all forms of the album.”

In 1964, while in Missouri state penitentiary, Wilson met the folklorist Bruce Jackson, who documented his poetry and toasts – a comic form of narrative Black folk poetry, akin to hobo balladry – for his 1974 book on the latter artform, Get Your Ass in the Water and Swim Like Me. This was accompanied two years later by an album of the same name on which Slim performed his works.

In the toast Hobo Ben, the titular wanderer asks the hosts of a party:

Ladies of culture and beauty so refined, is there one among you that would grant me wine?
I’m raggedy I know, but I have no stink
And God bless the lady that’ll buy me a drink.
Heavy-hipted Hattie turned to Nadine with a laugh
And said, ‘What that funky @#$%& really need, child, is a bath.’
Several lines from the song appear in Depp and Beck’s Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade, including the title: “I’m raggedy, I know, but I have no stink”, “God bless the lady that’ll buy me a drink”, and “what that funky @#$%& really needs, child, is a bath”.

“The only two lines I could find in the whole piece that [Depp and Beck] contributed are ‘big time @#$%&’ and ‘bust it down to my level’,” Jackson, a professor at the University of Buffalo, told Rolling Stone. “Everything else is from Slim’s performance in my book. I’ve never encountered anything like this. I’ve been publishing stuff for 50 years, and this is the first time anybody has just ripped something off and put his own name on it.”

The liner notes to the album credit Beck and Depp as the sole songwriters. The Guardian has contacted their representatives for comment. However, the original authorship of Hobo Ben, a work passed on through a competitive oral tradition, may be impossible to trace, along with the ownership of copyright.

Jackson’s son, Michael Lee Jackson, said they were exploring possible legal options. “They do not reflect the actual authorship of those lyrics,” he said. “It’s just not plausible, in my opinion, that Johnny Depp or anybody else could have sat down and crafted those lyrics without almost wholly taking them from some version of my father’s recording and/or book where they appeared.”

As the author of Get Your Ass in the Water, Jackson owns the copyright to the transcriptions of the toasts, making him tantamount to the author in US law, the lawyer Kevin J Greene told Rolling Stone, adding that it may be more of an ethical issue – not covered under US copyright law – than a legal one.

Of the album 18, the author told Rolling Stone: “I don’t know if this record is selling. I’ve seen some reviews that I’d be very embarrassed to have gotten had they been my album. But if it is selling, Johnny Depp is making a lot of money on it. Should it go to him, or should it go to some place that helps the people who produced this culture?”

I'm not quite sure what the cellist adds. I saw them at least once or twice with her but could never really hear her.

She clearly adds fuel to the bass guitar/ part of the rhythm section.
And she supports melodies sometimes.

If you hear it and Beck likes it, who am I to knock it. I just couldn't tell it was in the mix.

Darn...he's playing just 20 miles from me in Thousand Oaks, and normally I'd have been there no questions, but I'm just not interested in the current collaboration.
No big loss a I've seen him dozens of times in the past, but hopefully he'll move back to better things once he gets this out of his system.

saw Jeff Beck in Paris on Monday. He was fantastic.
Johnny Depp was like a bad actor playing a bad guitar player. If Beck thinks he needs a second guitarist and/or a singer he should hire a professional on. If the wants to spend time with Johnny Beck he should go to a pub with him.

Jeff is always fantastic, but...gonna have to pass on this one....
First time I saw him was the ARMS Benefit at the L.A. Forum in 1983 w/Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, et al, both nights, and his sets were the highlights of both evenings.
I've seen him many times since - small clubs, small theaters, small ampitheaters, small casino's, and was lucky to sit in on one of his soundchecks with about 40 other people...

I've seen him a real lot from a huge stadium opening for Aerosmith with Jan Hammer to the front row @ The Palms in Vegas with Brian Wilson. A few unusual venues, too like the zoo in Seattle & the state fair. At the state fair show, a few of us snuck into soundcheck due to loose security. This was when he had Jennifer Batten in the band. Jeff saw us & gave us a tsk, tsk but he was smiling & didn't have us kicked out. He's getting up there in age but his guitar playing is still supreme. I looked on the website & it said more dates to be added so I would expect Seattle & the northwest will be added on the end. I'll definitely go. He changed my musical path hugely in 1976. 2 years later I was conning my parents into letting me drive to Boulder (age 17) to see the Stones because I had to, haha. BTW: I've got a tape from Europe this summer that's unreal good until Johnny Depp comes on & even that's not too horrible. Fingers crossed Depp doesn't do the US tour.

All reports are DEpp is NOT on the upcoming US tour.
Just got a front row for Boston - $285 with the fees. Ouch. But for me, worth it.

I'll be sitting farther back if I get a show haha. Is ok, I'm sure he will do a theater show.

Awesome. thumbs up

Since yesterday, I've seen mixed reports about whether Depp will be there or not, but nothing official one way or the other yet.
I think the most I ever paid to see Jeff was about $125 back in 2014 for VIP that included first row, t-shirt, poster, and soundcheck...and ZZ Top was on the bill.
The shows in my area are not until November (L.A. and Thousand Oaks) so have a bit of time to ponder....but definitely not paying an arm and a leg.

hey Hairball - yeah I had those tix for Jeff and ZZ for Boston and it got cancelled when Dusty Hill fell on the tour bus or something. We were able to transfer them I think for when just Jeff played the Orpheum in Boston - I think sitting in on the soundcheck was even better than the show itself after!
I of course did not want to spend that much, but when I saw front row available (for less than the 2nd row!) I couldn't resist. In my book Jeff is the best guitarist ever - have seen him many times, and as they say - you never know if and when you'll get to see these legends again.
As to Johnny D. - I'd get a kick out of seeing him for a couple songs, but sounds like that's not happening (although an appearance or two - especially in the LA area, could be possible.)

Ticket sales must be slow. Johnny Depp joining the North American tour in the fall. That's unfortunate....

It’s a strange mix because Johnny is not in the league of Beck or the musicians he normally plays with but he brings something different to the show.
Alice and Joe Perry said the Vampires were a garage band and that kinda makes it fun.
I’ve been going to see Jeff off and on since the Wired tour and it’s always great when he brings someone out.
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck, I don’t need to tell you and the singer Beth Hart was a highlight.
We’ve had our minds blown for years,Depp will make things more casual.and the crowd may look a little different.

I'll still go if the tour makes it to Seattle. Not going to be many more chances to see Jeff.

Well that kicked-
as great as his instrumental stuff is he’s better with a singer in my opinion.
I can’t imagine how it would’ve been to see the first or second Jeff Beck group or BB and A.
I came in during Wired, There and Back etc. and waited I think 25 years to hear something from Truth.
Thank god for Beth Hart, I ain’t Superstitious, Morning Dew and a couple of others.picture Janis Joplin fronting a JB band.why that girl isn’t a superstar I don’t know.

I saw them together before COVID & it was amazing when Jeff came out & did several songs with ZZ. Jeff & Billy played real well together. It looked like they were having fun.
