OT: The Long-Promised "New Who" Album
Posted by: tatters ()
Date: August 26, 2005 17:21

Check out PT's latest musings at:

www.petetownshend.co.uk/diary/display.cfm?id=120&zone=diary

Is this guy full of shit or what? 1,400 "eggs" ready to demo? Give me a break. There is no new Who album. There never will be.

And you gotta love the Pete-bashing title of the new John Entwistle anthology. It's called "So Who's The Bass Player?".

Get it?

i like him
because i like freaks and oddities

I love his i thought of downloading music in 1971 and how it would lead to downloading of pornography (of a nature he himself was recently questioned of)

He doesn't have all his marbles at time.

The Who have been a lifelong obsession of mine, a true love/hate relationship. I have to admit I haven't been able to listen to them in quite the same way since the pornography story broke in early '03. All those lyrics about "the kids" take on a whole different meaning now (shudders).

I don't get how "So Who's the Bass Player" is Pete-bashing....

Pete was CLEARED of all those things.

The Who are amazing!! ( or were ) however you want to word it.

I wish there would be a new album BUT!!

John couldn't play on it... so there is no point!

John Entwistle is hands down THE GREATEST BASSIST EVER!

And anyway didn't Pete say he wish the rest of the band didn't record the last 2 albums after Mooney died ?!?

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

UUHHHHH!!!!

Let me explain:

When you write "Who's" with an apostrophe it means "Who is".

Who is the bass player.

Put the emphasis on "is".

Who IS the bass player.

Turn it around.

The bass player IS the Who.

Which is total bullshit, of course, but it's funny. And, although Pete did write 90% of the songs, on stage, it WAS the bass player who made most of the noise.

No, he copped a plea. They agreed to "clear" him and he agreed to be put on list of registered sex offenders. You don't actaully believe we have heard ALL the details about this, do you?

Yes. He says as far as he's concerned the Who ended in 1978. And yet it goes on, sort of, to this very day. John was the Hendrix of bass players. To him, it wasn't a BASS. it was a bass GUITAR, and he played it like a lead instrument. That was his genius.

I don't interpret that to be the case at all. The word "So" at the beginning kind of makes it impossible to put the emphasis on "IS" as you did. I really don't think they intended the title to be interpreted as "Who IS the bass player", i.e. "The Who is John Entwistle".

Yeah, Pete says the Who died with Moon. Yet he's not afraid to go out on the road with Daltrey and whomever and call themselves the Who so they can rake in the dough. He really annoys me and the fact he is a pedophile repulses me. They couldn't get Entwistle buried quick enough so they could get back to the road to fool the fans once again. And they do because they sell out every show. On the DVD from last year they talk of a new album. What a joke.

The title doesn't make sense if you interpret it any OTHER way than the way I have suggested. "So Who's the bass player?" are words that might well have come out of the mouths and entered the minds of many, many fans upon seeing the Who, or for that matter, the John Entwistle Band for the first time. They go in thinking it's all Pete, and then they realize, as I did the first time I saw the Who in 1979, that John is responsible for most of the tidal wave of sound that washes over you. And you think, or you say "So ..... the Who IS the bass player? I didn't know that. I thought it was the skinny guy with the big schnozz jumping around and waving his arms in the air!"

"Going to see the Stones?"

"Yeah".

"Who's the bass player?"

"Daryl Jones".

"Oh, ok".

I think it's quite that simple -- you're reading too much into it! There have been countless plays on words and puns relating to the name "The Who" -- Who's Next, Who's Last, Who's Missing, Who's Better Who's Best....this was just an opportunity to throw the word "Who" in there, I don't see it as a jab at anyone in the band but a way of linking John with the band name.

That's the beauty of it. "So Who's The Bass Player?" is a title that at first appears totally innocuous, something a fan might say upon seeing the Who for the first time, as in "Wow, the guy on bass is amazing, Who is he? I want to know more about him", but it also contains a darker, deeper meaning, the one I have revealed to you, an outrageous joke/insult directed at John's best friend/arch enemy. I knew John. Believe me, this is exactly in keeping with his sense of humor and desire to have the full weight of his contribution to the Who recognized.

Who albums except "Who's Next" = 1 or 2 good songs, the rest of the album a load of crap!

I don't think you've heard very many Who albums.

lol, could very well be. It just never occurred to me to put that spin on it.

More than I care to hear again. "Face Dances" or "It's Hard" are among the "GEMS" I speak of.

What would you say to someone who said "The Stones albums suck. I've heard Dirty Work"....

???

Although I like Face Dances, it's far from classic. It's Hard is an abomination. But Sell Out? Quadrophenia? The Who By Numbers? Tommy??? You are really missing out.

Your point is valid and is taken. BTW, I actually really dig The Who. I saw them in Orlando in 1982 and they blew the 1981 Stones show away. Many of the albums have LOTS of filler though. Great live act.

Townshend was cleared.

I'll repeat. Townshend was cleared.

My one cent:

Fantastic sixties singles band.

One of best live bands ever. Love Moon's drums, John's bass, Pete's guitar (and vocals) and Roger's voice.

Tommy: interesting. Lots of good songs.

Who's Next. One of the best ever. Their climax and pinnacle.

Then the slow decline. 1971-2 some good singles.

1973. Quadrophenia - another concept album Songs and playing are good but a come down from the heights of WN. One concept album (Tommy) was enough imo.

By Numbers - one or two good ones.

Who Are You - generally poor.

The last two albums (early eighties) - forget it really. The thrill was gone.

They should have called it quits. I KNOW they can still deliver a good live show.
But they don't exist as a working band - a creative musical group - and havn't for, really, over thirty years.

After the death of Moon they should have simply changed their name to The What.

The who another great bang but limited

Loved a lot of there stuff

Towns said something interesting he felt Stones great rock ban but would have been more diverse had Jones stayed

Interesting of all legendary Bands Stones only one to lose founding member

who was not a drummer and early on......

I think if BJ had stayed it would have been even more am azing if that is possible

I dont. Brian was creatively washed up a few years before he left. His contributions from 1967 onwards were negligible, maybe even earlier than that. The Stones were effectively a four piece band in the last couple of years that he was with them because the guy was a passenger

They couldnt have toured America in 1969 with him as he wouldnt have been able to get a visa. One of the reasons why he was asked to leave.

bringing Taylor in when they did gave them a new lease of life. Had they not replaced Brian when they did they wouldnt have lasted much longer.

Once upon a time (over 25 years ago) The Who were my favourite band. After their slow decline since Moon's demise, I now seriously doubt I would go see them if they were playing at the end of my road.

Check out this article on the BBC news site:

[news.bbc.co.uk]

"The Who are to record a version of their 1965 hit My Generation with McFly to launch a download site."

McFly???? Jesus......

And, even tho' it's a live album, don't forget 'live at leeds'. it's a classic kick ass album that is a monster and very hard to turn down it's so loud and rockin'!

'who are you' took a while to digest but it's a great album as well. the sound changed after keith moon's death but at least they tried to give us more music...til it ran dry.
