I notice that only one of the ads carries the admission price to the club, 4 or 5 shillings - in old English money before it went decimal - That would 20p or 25p in todays money. A new mini-car at the time was about £500. Makes our rent at Edith Grove sound expensive now - £!6 per week or £4 each.

The GER phone code -Gerrard- was for the West End area.

Cheerz, James! Interesting to know...

Yep. Mine was POPesgrove because the poet Pope once had a garden in Twickenham.

OK; I went along and DID this -

Here's my new set of T's; ready since earlier this afternoon -

it's vintage Stones history; and the beauty of it is... no copyright infringements! smoking smiley

All crew necks, apart from the black Ealing Club ad shirt, which is a "V";
and the blue one & the red one both are long sleeves.

If you go to my book "IORR The Ultimate Guide to the Rolling Stones" which came out almost 20 years ago. You will see copies all original Club adverts from 1962 in that book. The very first advert for the first gig July 12,1962 is on pp 56. How you know it is the 1962 ad and not from 1963 is Long John Baldry's Kansas City Blue Boys were on the bill and they (Kansas City Blue Boys) only existed for a short time in 1962 with Baldry. Other ads with the Stones that say just Long John Baldry are most likely from the Rolling Stones January 63 residency at the Marquee Club.. I believe my book was the first Stones book that ever had the July 12 1962 advert from the Marquee Club in it. Along with a bunch of others from 1962. Please feel free to use it as a reference.

P.S.: respectfuly, I reckon the red ad anouncing the Marquee residency, mentioning "...this Tursday, 3rd January " is therefor not from the Jazz News January 9 edition -
was Jazz News a 'weekly'?

Sorry, I thought I'd corrected it! (I have now)
Yes, it should be Jazz News January 2, 1963.
They used a virtually identical advert in the January 9 edition.

I like how advertisements varied between "The Rollin' Stones" and "The Rolling Stones". In that way before internet era the fans knew what papers and mags (aka dead trees) to buy to be informed. The information distribution worked very well.

Blues Incorporated used this advert in Jazz News several times in 1962 but this one comes from the April 4 edition advertising their gig at Ealing on Saturday April 7 - the night that Mick and Keith met "Elmo Lewis" for the first time. Charlie Watts was playing drums for Blue Inc. at the time so there were four future Stones in the room that night, five if you include Dick Taylor.

Re: Rolling Stones - [...] early ad's & concert posters...

I renamed this thread (EDIT: I tried... but didn't succeed), because I came across some stunning (imo) concert poster artwork from, again, these 'early days'; their Ricky Tick club concert posters, as found online: ...

I found others (gigs of different bands) as well; I must say I'm quite impressed with the rawness & authenticity of these graphics - very much pioneer stuff, I think, in these very-very 'early days' of poster artwork...
There's a distinct 'jazz' feeling in these drawings, although I can't put my finger on it...

Anyway: both these online images are very low-res. So: are there any books, the good folks over here can recommend, that have these posters in it?
Or is there anybody that could provide me with high-res digitals?

As always: much oblidged...

P.S.: VideoJames - I ordered your "IORR - the Ultimate Guide..." on Amazon.co.uk; very much looking forward to that! =o))

Re: Rolling Stones - [...] earliest ad (JAZZ News): puzzling...
Posted by: RoughJusticeOnYa ()
Date: July 14, 2017 14:25

I hope nobody minds if I revive this 'old one' yet again;
but I just realized I had some (recurring) puzzling thoughts about this (alledged?) ad "that started it all " ; the one that Brian Jones (supposedly) put in Jazz News in May, 1962...
So finally, I thought I might as well put these questions of mine out in the open over here!

- supposing Brian is the 'Guitarist': who's the 'Vocalist' he's reffering to? (Or should we think he meant: "guitarist ànd vocalist", as in one & the same person? (Shouldn't it have read "requireS", then? After all: correct grammar was a big thing, in those days.) If so: was Brian planning on being the lead singer himself?

- Why would Brian be looking for a harmonica player? I thought he had mastered that instrument by then?

- the 'Tenor Sax' seems a bit out of reach, regarding what he was listening to ànd aiming for (Elmore James, Big Bill Broonzy, Jimmy Reed, ...) as far as I can tell. (P.S.: what I know about Brian's early days, I mostly know from Paul Trynka's biography. And I quite possible overlooked or even forgotten stuff in it already.)

- And probably the most puzzling to me: why would he be looking for a Piano player? He already teamed up with Stu - or didn't he?

I guess all of this would make a lot more sense if it actually would've been Mick & Keith who'd put this exact ad up. But then again: they were working as 'Little Boy Blue & the Blue Boys ' by then, weren't they? Not that they didn't need decdent harmonica and/or tenor sax and drums & ... (etc.); but even so: the 'LBB & the
BB
' not being a full outfit yet in those days doesn't prevent it from being a bit more than just "Guitarist and Vocalist"... right?

Anyway: thanx in advance for your thoughts, opinions, knowledge & insights.
Sorry if all of this already has been discussed to respectable extent elsewhere (thx for directing me there, in that case...) -
and sorry also if I could 've answered all these questions myself if I'd bothered to get one or two of 'them books' out... smoking smiley
Still: would appreciate some back-&-forth feedback from you on this!

Apparently this is the advert that Stu responded to.
The line up indicated is very similar to Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated at the time.

Ah, OK - I didn't know thàt. (I thought this was what M & K responded to.)
OK, that clears up the 'Piano' question then.

And true; I noticed that similarity with other 'contemporary' line-ups of those days as well.
But I was under the impression that Brian aimed for a quite different aproach from starters - a lot more Mississippi & Chicago blues, as opposed to the more 'generic' R&B sound that (hardly, but nevertheless) 'qualified' in the eyes of the dominant 'trad jazz' scene of that time... ?!

Anyway: Cheerz, Deltics! smileys with beer

Mick and Keith didn't respond to the advert, they met Brian at a Blues Inc. gig at the Ealing Club when Brian was sitting in and got talking afterwards.

I don't think he played harmonica at this point. That came soon after.

So what about the "Guitarist and Vocalist" - plural?
or am I misreading this (a.o.) grammatically?
