Charlie Watts 's interview from R&F - part 1-

It's a rough translation from french.
Q - What kit do you use?
CW - Gretsch 1957 since 30 years with zildjian cymbals. The sticks are made by Vic Firth for me with my name on it.You can buy exactly the same in a shop.
Who wants to know all that?
Q - The new CD?
When K & M began to work, i was in an hospital. They wrote together for a long time then a break then first recordings for 1 month.New break then finitions.
M & K worked on it for a lot of things, my part lasted only a few weeks.
All the Stones albums are recorded night and day (Keith prefers the night and Mick the day).Problem for me and the bass player : when Mick leaves, Keith arrives...
Often for this time we were only the 3 of them with a lot of laughs.
Q - K and M are they "new" friend?
The question was sensitive, no longer now.
Q - May we talk about your desease?
I got a cancer. I don't smoke but it was there.Why me? Don't know.
I got a first surgery, then an other one then chimiotherapy and one day someone tells you : it's over you are "clean".
For a time i was in Villejuif with a wonderful specialist.
Q - A long tour now ?
18 month for the moment and more than 100 shows.Thinking about the whole thing dispress me, so i take it day by day, town after town.
Q - Since the 60's, the "showbiz" changes a lot...
Not that much : a rotten manager and his artist @#$%& by a record compagny. The new things are videos.
Myself ignoring Cd, clips and internet don't ask me more.
In Paris i got only MTV as english spoken TV and for the first time in my life i saw a lot of clips. Some are good.
What really changes for me : my first record was a french jazz record, imported, a Vogue record with the logo red and black.I still got this record and i like to look at the cover with love.I don't think someone looks at a Cd or a DVD with the same passion.
Q - recent musical emotion?
Françoise Hardy alone with her guitar in the TV show Trafic musiques (the Stones will be on the next show in september from Marclaff). Also in Paris Roy Haines at the New Morning, a great club by the way.
