I finally saw someone list my favorite.

Albert King. His sound, his signiture licks, his voice. It was his live shows that were truly...I can't even think of the word...spiritually moving, perhaps. He was one loud, badass mother. I saw him live first in 1976...and then I saw him nearly a dozen times after that. The last time in Chicago, the year he died. I taped a bunch of his shows. To this day I miss him...but I make sure his music is always nearby.

You are right about Albert King, a true icon with a stinging delivery ... that's what is fun about these threads, you think of something and then realize you've overlooked obvious contenders.

For example SRV is one of my idols and I didn't immediately think of his stuff when this topic started ... too many brain cells gone missing probably!

Yes, yes, yes on Albert King! I remember being introduced to him on his tour bus in 1980...what a gentleman...and his Live in S.F. record is fantastic, not to mention his version of Honky Tonk Woman...

and speaking of Alberts...what about Albert Collins?

Speaking of Kings, what about Freddie King? Man did he blaze a trail. Clapton would never have been heard of without Freddie as his prototype.

T&A,

I am now red-faced! And "blaze a trail" fits Freddie King so well.

On the subject of Kings, here a funny bit I once heard on the radio. A DJ played three songs in a row...Switching to Glide by the Kings, Killer Queen by Queen, and Dirty Mind by Prince. He said "How's that for some music royalty? And now let's follow it up with a little "Serf/Surf" music" and he played California Girl by the Beach Boys...pretty clever...

Albert and Freddie are probably my favorite blues guitarists. Between them - they pretty much archtyped the entire electric blues guitar idiom for all the bad-asses that followed in the 60s and 70s (and 80s if you count the likes of SRV). If I could pick just one blues guitar oriented tune - it would have to be "Blues Power" from Albert's Live Wire album. If that solo don't melt your eardrums, you are a hopeless cause.

Is Blues Power the one where he talks about the little baby crying for its milk?

that's the one...

Re: Greatest Blues Songs ever?

that's what I referring to in the earlier post...his voice, his guitar, everything just came together...what a great show that must have been...

the disc isn't called Live in SF, though, it's called Live Wire - from the Fillmore 1968....

Elmore James - Dust My Broom.
Robert Johnson - Crossroad Blues.
B.B. King - How Blue Can You Get.
The Rolling Stones - Black Limousine.

Stevie Ray's "Tin Pan Alley" is just a monster blues hit too... "Dirty Pool" is so blue it's creepy.

thanks BrianKeith - I presume it's the same track on both those albums. I'd forgotten about that Alligator release - never did check that one out. I've got all his original Chess output...there's a treasure trove of masterpieces there, of course.

Is it just me or do you find the tone of Alligator records to be bland? The playing is good, just something about the ovrall tone...
