Dylan's "Meet Me In The Morning" is a terrific track.

Muddy's "Just To Be With You" features some of Little Walter's most amazing playing...also:

Little Walter: "Hate To See You Go," "Sad Hours"

Howlin' Wolf: "Shake For Me"

John Lee Hooker: "I'm Bad Like Jesse James" (check out Jagger fooling around with this tune in "Performance")

Alvin "Youngblood" Hart: "Moonlight Mile" Takes my breath...

and while we're at it, Jimmie Rodgers, the "Singing Brakeman," is as great a white bluesman as anyone. Dead from consumption at 35--"T.B. Blues," "Miss The Mississippi And You" (Dylan's "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry is a pretty bluesy and brilliant tribute to Rodgers)

As for sad, "The Thrill Is Gone" aches as much as any record I can think of...

Ever ear I Smell A Rat by Buddy Guy? In that one, both he and his guitar are posessed.

Rollin' and Tumblin' - Little Walter
The Sky is Crying - Sonnyboy Williamson
Hell Hound on my Trail - Robert Johnson
John the Revelator - Sunhouse
Cry to Me - Stones (even better than Burk's original)

you talking about the Stone Crazy! version on the Alligator album? yeah - that one always blew me away. Buddy had trouble making great studio albums for many years - that one might have been his real success. He's had several good ones since.

StonesTod,

That's the one. I rememeber hearing it on the radio for the first time and the DJ cautioned "This one will tear your face clean off!"

On a more tender side, Buddy's version of It Feels Liek Rain is, I think, the best soul song of the 1990s.

Crossroads must be the ultimate blues song, but my all time favourite is Spoonful by Howlin Wolf. What a voice that man got...

I know blues purists may cringe but you bringing up Janis got me thinking ... I go back to the live version of "Ball and Chain" more often than I do most of my old "authentic" blues material. So I'll go with that and expect some fall-out.

At the time a lot of people complained about the shoody musicianship of the Big Brother players but for me it was so raw and visceral that it tied in perfectly with Janis' vocals ... ah crap I gotta go dig that album out!

Blues purists can @#$%& themselves imho.
Of course Ball & Chain must be mentioned here.
I´m certain I´ll find some more the day I go thru
Nina Simones musical treasure.
Forgot another: @#$%& Blues.

The boundaries between blues/gospel/boogie/r&b is hard to withhold I think:
Sister Morphine is by many definitions a blues song.

And thank you Rockman for the fine list: you are a living blues-(and reggae-, and rock n´roll-)dictionary.

Evil - Howlin' Wolf
Mannish Boy - Muddy (The HARD AGAIN Version!!!)
Tupelo - JL Hooker
Tell Me What's The Reason - T-Bone Walker
Traveling Riverside Blues - Robert Johnson
Key To The Highway - Big Bill Broonzy
Peavine Blues - Charley Patton
Honest I Do - Jimmy Reed

Tomorrow this list will be completely different, but probably the same artists.

I can't even begin to summon up a short list of greatest blues songs. The blooze is more a "language" than it is a collection of songs anyway. They all borrow liberally from one another to form the language.

I really enjoyed the Allmans version also ... I also really liked "Whipping Post" and "One Way Out" on the "Fillmore" album. Duanne was one of the very best blues slide players and I still listen to that album quite a bit.
