It's one of my favourite guitar solos but I have always wondered whether it's Ron or Mick T.Does somebody know? It could be Mick Taylor since it was an outtake from some seventies sessions.
The authors of Jeff's (Beck) book say Ron overdubbed it long after the original recording. Doesnt sound like MT to me. Saying the RS laid down the WAY track first in Rotterdam while Jeff was visiting (the audition, if you will), authors continue, suggesting though it has a "slight Beck resemblance..It is definitely Ron Wood on the (TY) version..." I'd always thought it might be Wayne Perkins.
The notes sound like they could be MT but the attack is definetly Ron Wood. And with those two elements in place it is a dead ringer to the Hand of Fate solo. Maybve it is Wayne. There might be some people who say it is a certain way or another but the truth is that no one knows better than anyone else. we all read the same books.
It's Wayne Perkins, no doubt about it! This ain't Ronnie's style at all. Ronnie messed his solo during the Licks tour on Worried About You up big time. He tries to copy it from the beginning, but it then goes nowhere (incl false notes).
Well that doesnt mean he couldnt do it in 1979 or 81, not drunk, especially if as the JB book suggests he was replacing (basing his on) a 'wiped' solo by either JB or WP. I'm not arguing this - as I said, on first hearing it struck me as WP - just what I've read.
Yeah it's possible that he tried to copy Wayne's solo.Ronnie is certainly a guitarist who can do such things but still it is more likely that it's Wayne's solo.

as it was first recorded during the Black and Blue sessions in Rotterdam in 75, Taylor is one guitarist you can safely say it wasnt
wayne perkins on Worried, his solo on hand of fate is so taylorsque. regarding taylorsque,on carla olson's record Ring of Truth which taylor plays on there is a song called locked up tight - The solo is amazing and so tayorsque but it is not taylor but another player which I can,t recall that played on the record.
I knew him from his "Swampers" days in Muscle Shoals. Ran into him around the time of Tattoo You when he was playing in a smokin' little band called Crimson Tide. I complimented him on it and he didn't say "that wasn't me"! He could have been taking credit for something he didn't do, but I doubt it!
Wayne is a seasoned vet. I would have loved to have heard what his contribution to the Stones would have been!

yes it is - and it gives you an idea of what might have been edited out of the GHS version. BTW, they recorded a second version of Winter for the Olson/Taylor album and last I recall, Carla was trying to get it released through a compilation album. Another 12-minute version it was....
It is Wayne Perkins for sure. Listen to the two outtakes. You can hear Wayne Perkins figuring out the solo, and the solo of the long outtake is edited down to the solo you hear on Tattoo You. Also, Perkins has said in interview (on his own site I believe) that he does the solo. And, it can't be Wood -it's not his tone and feel.

where can i find the 12-minute version of 'winter'? i'd give my right arm for that...

well - if he flew in and out - he stayed long enough to contribute to almost all of the album's tracks. Features a very tastey take on Dylan's Please Crawl Out Your Window, too...
