On the copy I have the first song is called Just Before, not Just Because. U Don't Wanna sounds like it might be an early take of Driving Too Fast...Cried Out sounds like possibly an early take of, Laugh, I Nearly Died to me.

Sorry Mr.D, may you confirm that "Just Because" or 'Just Before' is early version of KR's 'Trouble'?

Both, Just Before is the all music part of Because, most of Because is the band deciding what key and beat and everything to play the song in, real "fly on the wall" stuff!

Many thanks Mr.D! I hope one day will be available BTB and 40 Licks sessions!

What's odd is that Trouble begins with the lyric "just because", while IIRC, Mick's guide vocal in the original didn't have anything to do with that. So it's like the Stones titled the song after recording that basic track, and it's listed with a question mark ("Because?"). As for "Just Before," I may have copied it down wrong, though if it's the same take, that's just as odd.

These were on the tape my late Manager had from the '02 sessions:

Just Because
Dreams
Cried Out
Because? (a second take of Just Because)
Love is a Test
When I Call Your Name
U Don't Wanna
Don't Stop
Keys to Your Love

These are all MJ lead guide vocals.

Thanks for the song titles. Do you know when and where these sessions happened. NZentgraf lists some song writing sessions by Mick and Keith in Jamaica in Feb. 2002.

Hope that these sessions might leak out one day just like the great Foxes in the Boxes Vol. 1-3 releases that leaked various Emotional Rescue to Dirty Work outtakes.

Putting this list of titles next to the already known list there is LOVE IS FOR ME (a cover The Meters song) and LOVE IS A TEST.
Could it be this is the same song? I listened to LOVE IS FOR ME by The Meters on YouTube tonight and it's a slow soulfull number.

Was that the one mentioned by Dominique Tarlé after he attended the 2002 sessions?

I don't know where the info on Saber producing sessions came from but it makes sense as that's a lot of songs (and we need to add SMH and LMT) for just a three week session with Don Was in Paris. Especially since they were shooting for two songs originally as announced at the Blimp PC, and Keith made it sound like they had nothing at the time ("only a small problem").

Don't really understand the rationale behind these sessions, a way to prove to themselves they were not an oldies band touring behind a compilation? Fast forward 10 years and they certainly have no qualms about that anymore!

Did Danny Saber do any producing with these tracks? I've never seen anything that said he did.

Only Found Out Yesterday - Keith must've liked that line from Thru & Thru, eh?

So this is listed for what's on disc 2 of FORTY LICKS and the last two listed make me wonder...

- Beast Of Burden (MJ/KR) -promo edit
- Fool To Cry (MJ/KR) -promo edit
- Emotional Rescue (MJ/KR) -remixed version
- Undercover Of The Night (MJ/KR) -remixed version

With two exceptions, one not shown, those are all single edits. BOB was edited for its 45 single release, which is used on SUCKING IN THE SEVENTIES, JUMP BACK, FORTY LICKS and FIFTY LICKS/THE SIMIAN INCIDENT.

UOTN is an edit strictly for FORTY LICKS (4:13), the US promo single edit is 3:59.

IORR was the other one - which oddly isn't listed on the nzentgraf page. ER is the promo edit from Side B of the promo 12" single which is also the video single edit.

So those aren't remixes, they're edits.

Good question Jeroen.
Mr. D. and TeddyB: Why not share these outtakes with other fans?
Are you being paid for keeping them unheard?

Teddy has stated more than once he heard them, he doesn't have a copy of the tape.

From another perspective, there are fans who get to hear tracks that do not circulate. If they share it, they're cut out of the inner circle. The same way that if you hear inside information and share it publicly, your insider friend suddenly doesn't respond to you. Let's be grateful for the information we do have.

These sessions do fascinate me somewhat. I cannot help but wonder what else they toyed with during the Doom and Gloom/One More Shot recording period.

Not much time to toy around with in 2012.

The 2002 LICKS sessions took almost a month (may 13 - june 8).

The 2012 GRRR! sessions only four days (aug. 20 - 23), taken from www.nzentgraf.de:

20th - 23rd August:
THE ROLLING STONES. Suresnes (near Paris), France, Studio Guillaume Tell. Producers: The Glimmer Twins & Don Was.
Recording sessions. Additional musicians:Chuck Leavell (keyb),Darryl Jones(bass)
Incl.
- Doom And Gloom I (MJ/KR) -Album Mix
- Doom And Gloom II (MJ/KR) -Radio Mix a/k/a Jeff Bhasker Mix
- Doom And Gloom III (MJ/KR) -Benny Benassi Remix
- One More Shot I (MJ/KR/Steve Jordan) -GRRR!-version
- One More Shot II (MJ/KR/Steve Jordan) -Jeff Bhasker Mix
Note: Recording of two new tracks for the upcoming new greatest hits compilation 'GRRR!

Quite a lot seems to have been recorded during those sessions. This list confirms what the Stones said in interviews in 2002 and 2003. Back then it seemed that they were planning to continue working on the songs on tour and release them as a whole new album in 2003 or 2004. Guess that A Bigger Bang contains a lot of these song ideas.

Does anyone have more information on the Danny Saber sessions which are rumoured to have happened before the Paris 2002 sessions? When and whre did they take place?

Somehow I was seduced to re-read this thread from 2015 about the 2002 LICKS sessions.

Nice re-reading indeed.

Hopefully there will be a thread about the missing titles from the 2015-2017 NO FILTER sessions in the future!
