off the top of my head, Gimme Shelter is the only song that comes to mind that I would put ahead of Like a Rolling Stone.

definitely.

but its a difficult thing to come up with five ...

depends on mood of the day, I would think.

I do think those two songs should be in a 'top five' of greatest rock songs ..

I'd probably have to include JJF ..

and right now I'd include Satisfaction too..so at least three out of the five would be Stones tunes.

and today I'd include 'Every Picture Tells A Story", which I regard as one of the all time greats...surely everyone would agree..? cool smiley

satisfaction is definitely a contender. i also thought about "a day in the life" and "help", i don't think either choice would be popular here though ;-)

it's amazing to think about what a great year 1965 was for rock singles - both like a rolling stone, satisfaction, and help coming out that year.

A great song made even better by the amazing gum chewing performance by Jimi in Monterey, the passion of this performance is truly jaw dropping.

The guitar fills here are some of the best ever done and will hold up to anything anybody will do for a long time to come. Just wow.

I got an older boy in my neighborhood to take me to see Bob Dylan with The Band.

It was my first rock concert.

Bob did not speak to the audience.

Finally, one daring kid in the audience yelled, "Hey Bob!"

Most of us were HORRIFIED!

There was the world's longest silence.

And then, Bob mumbled at us, "Someone calling me?"

The music continued...No more talk from Bob.

I do not remember a single song but I'm sure I wrote it all down somewhere...

(Probably because in the back of my mind, I knew that some day I would meet
a girl called Aquamarine...and that she would demand all details of this gig.)

I do recall that soon after that show "Like a Rolling Stone" was heard virtually non-stop on LA's leading rock station, KHJ. It was a milestone
in Los Angeles's musical history.

I also remember saying to my neighborhood date as he drove us home...

"Wow! We just heard a singer who was on drugs!"

Masterpiece.
It's epic in every way: the words, music, delivery, the way it builds and sustains this level of intensity....I love how it kicks in, with those great guitar fills. And it has these great minor 7 chords we usually don't associated with Dylan.
I proudly sing along every single word.

one of the best opening lines of any song

"Once upon a time you dressed so fine threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?"

Arguably the greatest rock song of all time. Springsteen said it well: "that opening drum is like Bob kicked open the door to your mind." One of those "hits" I never get tired of.

I will PLAY IT F*CKING LOUD at some point today.

Lest we forget our elders, I'd add "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis P and "Johnny B Goode" by Chuck B to a top five list. Remember, John Lennon and Keith both noted "Heartbreak Hotel" by Elvis opened their ears, eyes and mind to other possibilities in life.

As someone posted, LARS needs to be played fluckin' loud which I am now doing. What a great mix of music and words. Michael Bloomfield's guitar work is wow as already noted above. Kooper on organ is something else considering he wasn't there to play keys but guitar. And Dylan, what a punk snarl he's throwing out. He sounds piss*d as hell at somebody and is letting 'em have it.

For another taste of Bloomfield behind Dylan, check out "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" which I'd also put up as a candidate for a rock music top five cut. But than I'd also put up Rod Stewart doing "Every Picture Tells a Story" which is not just a great tune but a great album. Rod used to rock like crazy. Saw him a few times back in Baltimore with the Faces. They were drunk and or stoned or so it seemed; they played sloppily, if not badly; they rocked like hell; they were great. Gotta say, this seems to be what's missing in popular music these days, but this is a discussion for another thread....

Dylan made 15 recordings of this song, and the one at H61R is the last, and the one he was really happy with. He understood from the beginning how good the song really was.

Rock-songs that can match it?

Lennons She Said She Said, Costellos Hand in Hand or Stones Gimmie Shelter

Yes, perhaps Dylan's greatest rock song. Coming when it did in 1965 is when it started exploding in pop, rock music. I never heard it in 1965(the year I was born) but when I did it was like being catapulted back in time. Broke the two minute song barrier.

Like everyone else I love the opening, the sound of guitar and keyboards together is fantastic. Great lyrics, not so subtle reminder of what lies ahead.

I read in some book that Dylan was hanging out with Brian Jones prior to writing the song.

Hyperbole gets thrown at many songs, that get credited with being "game changers," etc.

Like a Rolling Stone really WAS a complete game changer.
