It has been more than three decades since the Rolling Stones satisfied Central Mass. music fans with an impromptu show at Sir Morgan's Cove in Worcester. It was only rock 'n' roll, of course, but it earned a spot in the memories of the region's music buffs.
In August of 1981, the Rolling Stones holed up at Gil Markel’s Longview Farm in North Brookfield, where they rehearsed for their upcoming tour following the release of their No. 1 album, “Tattoo You.” Sightings of Mick Jagger, Keith Richard, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman and Ron Woods were reported in many Central Mass. towns. On the evening of Sept. 14, 1981, as a thank you for their stay in the area, the Rolling Stones previewed their tour with a show at Sir Morgan’s Cove in Worcester, billing themselves as “The Cockroaches.” The Stones performed a free two-hour concert for 300 "randomly selected" fans. Some 4,000 more fans that got wind of the surprise show packed Green Street in hopes of getting through the doors. But most got no satisfaction.
