No offense, but do you put "black" people in a nother category?
I assume it's a matter of speech...

Rock in itself is the result of the blending of many diverse styles of American music...mainly blues (which also spawned jazz) and country; with a little bluegrass and gospel thrown in for good measure!

Exile is just that, a great mixture of all of the diverse styles that are the ingredients that make up the mother category, Rock!

That being said, you are exactly right, bluespeyer! In the end, Exile is all rock, and JUST rock (well, one calypso tune!) But diverse in that it's a showcase for all of the styles that eventually melded together to give birth to rock.
So, its diverse in its non-diversity?

Oh, screw it! It's Only Rock N Roll!

Something is very wrong with the world tonight - I disagree with Gazza !

Sticky Fingers is perfect - absolutely perfect.

Well apart from the organ bit 2:14 into I Got The Blues - oh wait a minute, it *is* ALMOST perfect. Agreed then Gazza - the world is once again fine !

Been listening a lot to Some Girls, IORR and Goat's Head recently and for me Goat's Head wins every time.

Some Girls - don't like Lies and some bits of the song Some Girls I coulda written better - and I wouldn't even want royalties !

Oh no - something *IS* wrong with the world tonight - I *DO* disagree with Gazza !

LOL

"Lies" used to be the only track for me on "Some girls" that I thought was a notch below the rest...however I just love the rumbling guitars on it, plus its so bloody funny. I just think the song suffers by comparison with the rest of the album - but had it been on ER or any album since, it would be a standout

I dont think "You gotta move" is on the same level as the rest of the songs on sticky Fingers. Its bloody good by anyone's standards, but again like "lies" just suffers by comparison. (it mu st be a thing they had - hide the weakest song on the album at the end of side 1. On "Beggars banquet" and "Emotional Rescue" they do the same actually, as far as I'm concerned!)

I couldnt compare GHS with Some Girls. Some of it is indeed majestic and beautiful but it just doesnt 'roll' like I like a Stones album to do. One reviewer way back when described "Dancing with Mr D" as a song that "wouldnt frighten a four year old". 100% correct, its the Stones by numbers is that one. Was very good when played live in '73, however. I think theres a lot of very good songs on it, but unlike the "Big Four" and "Some Girls" relatively little thats amongst the high points of their career. Part of the problem with it for me was that its probably the worst mixed album they ever did. I appreciated it more when I heard the Virgin remasters and especially the Mickboy version.

Mind you, if they put an album out like that in 2005, we'd go ballistic with excitement

I'll agree with Edward Twining on this one! Some Girls always felt to me like a light weight collection. It sounded to me like the Stones trying to be PUNK. I never liked Mick TALKING lyrics or shouting them and the pace is frantic. I like the frantic pace of RIP THIS JOINT but not the disjointedness of LIES . THere's just an element missing from this collection, for me. I never loved MISS YOU and cringe when they do it live! I do like BEAST OF BURDEN but there are far better ballads, if you can call that a ballad. FAR AWAY EYES is twangy, SHATTERED is redundant. Just my opinion. EXILE will always be THE ALBUM OF ALL ALBUMS for me.

I thought I was about the only one that preferred GHS over Some Girls! Now I don't feel so all alone (everybody must get stoned?)

I was glad Some Girls came out like it was - uptempo - lightweight - punky - snotty, whatever. 'cause since '76 I was getting into Clash, Ramones, Damned + Bands I can't even remember the names of.
I could only hear the Stones secretly and my "friends" would gimme ^^eyebrowes. By '78 that Punk movement gave me way to grab a guitar, and do what I felt - and that sure wasn't a feel of FoolTo Cry or Dancing with Mr D.
So I was glad to hear SomeGirls.
A bigger Bang is going to change the continuity in Stones Songs again. I guess+hope.

I can't give it away on 7th avenue.............

still the one stone's album that i rotate with all my other music, except of course for 40 licks. It stands above all the current and past music of the last 25 years. Though I must say that this new green day is pretty damn good.

How can you be a Stones fan and not like Some Girls? Far Away Eyes?

The entire party would go in the bathroom to look at the album sleeve in the mirror. Things don't get any better than this.........
