He Chelsea, you're scaring me. There's hardly anything to add to your posts and now you're reading the same book.
Just finished that Shantaram by Roberts, i couldn't put it away, had fights with my wife as i looked myself in the loo for hours to have my peace reading.
The book for me is most interesting as i am currently exactly there where he describes. I use to sit in this 'Leopold' every weekend and of course use the same black market money changers and charras vendors in colaba.
That guy is not bullshitting. Heard somewhere that it's going to be a Hollywood movie shortly with Jonny Depp coming to Bombay for shooting.

I'd say the definitive tome on Jim Morrison is last years biog by Stephen Davis. Still, Break On Through is much better than the myth-filled Jerry Hopkins book.

All fine here, had a little flood in bombay the last 3 days, no power, no telephone and cars swimming through the streets. As you will know now from your book, worst hit are always the slums, they had some casualties. Last night there even was som tsunami panic rumors and all people ran on the streets thereby killing annother 20 or so. However, this is bombay and we love or hate it.

Very fine one, indeed.
Like many here I´m also into Dostojevskij.
Ja ljobljo njevo.
But some years have passed since I read him;
hey, maybe its time to borrow some at the library.
Mostly easy reading for me last couple of years: bios on the Stones
and on other artists & similar stuff. Thrillers. Stephen King.
So much heavy stuff I gotta read in my work; guess it creates a need
for going for the lightweight stuff. But King writes like a maestro in his genre.

At the moment, Mario Puzo's "The Last Don".

Well, when I pick up my copy of A Bigger Bang later on today, I'll probably be reading the lyrics to all the songs. This cd will have a lyrics booklet won't it? I'm also reading a comic book called Death Jr. It's hilarious! And the artwork is cool too. What can I say? I'm a comic book nut! And I have plenty of Stones related books like Stone Alone by Bill Wyman, The Rolling Stones Album by Geoffrey Giuliano and many more.

I am in a period for good crime stuff. And since Ellroy has not released anything in years even though he says the last volume in his trilogy has been ready for a long time, I found a new writer. His name is John Connolly. He has put out several books and is pretty good.
Also "The Fourth Hand" by J Irving.
Has anyone here ever read "The Fan Man"? Dorky dorky dorky....LOL

1968 by Mark Kurlansky

Fabulous books which are also very easy reads, so suited for a holiday mood are anything by Joyce Carol Oates and Muriel Sparks. From the former, I especially loved "Middle Age" and "We were the Mulvaneys" (there is also a much more extreme book titled "First love - A gothic tale". Impressive.) From the latter, have a laugh with "The Girls of slender means", "The Prime of miss Jean Brodie". But each and every Sparks novel is exhilarating, I guess if you read these, you'll want more and could turn to "The Comforters" or "The Bachelors".

Both authors have a stripped-down style, no descriptions but great wit and great depth (although it is less apparent, more understated in Sparks than in Oates - anything to do with the former being english and the latter american?)

Hi Olivier, no never read them. In case of a holiday mood I often grab a Patricia Highsmith. Not just the Ripley novels but also the others: Those Who Walk Away, The Two Faces of january, The Cry of the Owl, The Tremor of Forgery - all haunting reads with great psychology and with heraos and villains (often difficult to distinguish) obsessed as Dostoyevsky's characters. She's really a twisted anthopologist, but in a fascinating way. Highly recommended!
