I found on the internet this letter by MJ, placing the order for the SF cover artwork to Andy Warhol.

Is the further outcome of the story known? What did AW write back on how much money he wanted?

Given the date, the record that was sent and the mention of a "new hits album", I think this letter refers to Through the Past Darkly.
