I pulled out my "Best of Bowie" CD over the weekend. I was just wondering what all the real stones fans think of "Dancing in the Streets". I mean besides it being a good gesture for a good cause, Do you like it? I think its actually pretty cool. Not a bad rendition.

Live Aid from Wembley concentrated to one hour was on Swedish tv two day ago.
I´m into Gazza´s line here: Just a video. Hate the clothes though.
Clapton was best at Wembley imho. Bowie ok. the Who stank. jagger & Tina great performers but lousy song choice & iorr never lifted.

Never thought much of it, I guess it was sort cool when it came out but nothing special. I liked Jagger's song Ruthless People from this period much more. And the B-side I'm Ringing.

I thought it was ok. It funny you bring up the Bowie and Jagger subject because a friend and I were talking about how Bowie's music has always seemed more "progressive" "alternative" as compared to what the Stones (and Mick) have done. Bowie seems to re-invent himself every few years and tries very hard to stay current. His older stuff still gets airplay on alt rock stations and college radio stations in the Boston area. The Stones are pretty much relegated to oldies and classic rock stations.

The best stuff Bowie did - except from Ziggy- and Berlin-period - I think was done under the name Davy Jones in the 60´s before he became famous. But I must add I havent heard much of his stuff the latest 15 years - "recently".
He sure wasnt avantgarde in 1985 and he knew it, today he´s ashamed of that period (plus over one or two other periods, e.g. The Thin White Duke-).

A few good songs songs before Space Oddity (especially Love you Til Tuesday), but definitely not his best period.
To me his best album will always be Hunky Dory. That's a kind of singer-songwriter Bowie but there's also some glam. And he never wrote better songs than the ones on Hunky Dory (Quicksand!!!)
The entire 70s and early 80s were great David Bowie years. He kinda lost after the release of Let's Dance. But was trying again on Black Tie, White Noise and returned completely to form in 1995 with 1. Outside.

Everything I´ve heard of official older material is gems.
70´s is a fine period, but a little roller coaster-up-and-down-trip.

I always think Bowie is a very contrived artist who never really convincingly reflects the spirit of rock. He's never had a strongly identifiable voice of his own so he's used other peoples - Anthony Newley, Scott Walker etc. and musically he's adapted ideas from Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and even the Stones (in the seventies) amongst others.I've never really swallowed his chameleon/pioneer of new sounds status - i have always considered him a very bright opportunist who has seen various styles/creativity in less known musicians and incorporated their style bring it to the masses for public consumption. He has written some really fine songs in his time - i'll give him his due but to me the Stones, Reed and Dylan are the genuine article who represent the true spirit of rock - Bowie is more a contrived poser by comparison.

Bowie Stone i agree whole heartedly with your view of Hunky Dory as Bowie's best album.

Always disliked the duo's cover, give me Martha & the Vandellas anyday! For that matter I'll take from Bowie Hunky Dory, 2) Heroes, 3) Low, 4) Man Who Sold the World, 5) Station to Station, etc. Hell I'll take She's the Boss over DITS.

Did some research; I was wrong before -
it´s the erliest time as Bowie (1967) I fancy the most, not the Jones era.

Pinups does kick ass, especially good Mick Ronson (RIP) album.

IMO, The Man Who Sold the World is Bowie's best album. Followed closely by Ziggy Stardust.

I noted Nicky ´opkins played keyboards while
Clapton performed "Leyla" & other stuff. Groovy guy, Nicky!

I think that song is rottenly bad. I never liked the original, and how horrible was that video.

marvpeck, actually in Grand Blanc (near Flint) but spend most of my time in Detroit as I work there.

Dancing in the Street works best in the context of the video. The way those two old pros work off each other reminds me of a clip of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin horsing around on Dean's show in the 60's.

It was just two pals having a lot of fun.

Yeah it's Mick & Bowie doin' the old..You Be The Ham & I'll Be The Eggs routine.

I enjoyed Dancing in the Streets very much.
Bowie introduced concert types which we never saw before. I remember very well his 78 tour and Let's Dance Tour etc.
Bowie was the most creative artist and made things and explained things which happened to be normal years later.
Unfortuantely all his music style was already shown on the beauiful Hunky Dory album
