Who's Been Sleeping Here? and BtheB questions

I didn't even know this song 2 weeks ago, and now I absolutely love it.

Rocking, great piano, some psych backwards guitar effects. Sounds very Jimmy Miller-ish to me. Great lyrics and delivery 'must be joking' !

Really all the Stones ingredients are here, cooked up into a catchy, tough, groovy pie.

Who else wants to celebrate this song?

What? Presumably then you still have the rest of "Between The Buttons" still to listen to?
I almost envy you discovering this great album for the first time! One of my big favourites...recorded in 1966, released Jan 67 - before Jimmy Miller worked his own magic...

Hey Zagalo, I've been a big Stones fan for about 20 years, and I know every bassline, guitar scratch and economical drum fill from Beggars B to a Bigger B, but for some reason (prejudice? ignoarance?) I've never given the earlier albums a chance.

I listened to Aftermath the other day, but it's Between the Bs that has been swimming round my head and demanding daily plays. I have to say, it is a fabulous feeling having a crop of "new" (and amazing) Stones tunes to get to know, and I'm now glad I waited smileys with beer

The fact that they thing most of Between The Buttons is "rubbish" is one of the stupidest things they've ever said. They're obviously open to their own opinions, but thats pure Stones right there before they were trying for something specific. Every song is excellent.

The only song I don't care for is Cool, Calm, Collected. ALl the others are varying degrees of excellence.

I know they said it was rubbish, but the Stones (particularly the 2 principals) are given to flippant comments, English sarcasm and drunken tomfoolery, (eg replace Bill with a back bassist) that should be taken with a pinch of salt (or other white powder).

The vocal melody of Complicated is kind of haunting me these days!

I've loved the whole album since I discovered it in '73 - CCC included. It always pleases!

An often overlooked song. One of my favorites.

Its a gooder...

This band... forever... the progressions and moods and sounds and feels...
so good for so long... I love it all... from the mid 60s to "Doom and Gloom".
It is all so good, so vast and so deep.

They don't seem know what or who they like depending on the year or decade.
"No we dont like RNR Circus, we're not releasing it"...
then later..... "OK OK now we do like it, so here it is".

Alos amusing is their (and many people's) changing opinions about Exile.
For so long they groaned about conditions of recording, but now seem to
have come around to say it was done perfectly... in that dank basement.

Which is why long ago I stopped judging what they do harshly.
If mean if they are not sure how I can I be? I love it all...
Of course I love some songs more than others... but then at
strange moments for strange reason a song I didnt really care
for sneaks up on me and for some weird reason I suddenly love it.

I think Mick disregards most of BtB because in many ways it is one of two albums that are clearly directly influenced by their contemporaries.

"Who's Been Sleeping Here" is obviously a product of Jagger (and maybe Jones?) listening to Dylan's albums of the period ( namely "Blonde on Blonde" ), and I hear a lot of The Kinks in songs like "Cool, Calm, Collected" and "Something Happened to Me Yesterday"; they have a very British Pop/ Music Hall sensibility that the Stones never really bothered with before or after.

I happen to like BtB, but it is one of the few albums where I think it's clear that they were listening to other bands for inspiration, and I think that grates on Mick's ego in hindsight. The other one, of course, is "Their Satanic Majesty's...", which he has similarly disowned.

I remember how much I loved this in my early teens. It's a nice song from an interesting and underrated - no forgotten - album. Sure they try to sound like Dylan, Beatles, Kinks, The Who etc but so what. It's the Stones.

It was the era of Swinging London and 'The Summer Of Love' to come - that's what was happening then generally in popular music...

The outtakes reveal that the summing of all the separate instrumentation soured the final mix. So many beautiful details on songs like Yesterday's Papers.. Parts that are hidden in the background of the final mix. I wish they'd take the original tapes and let Tame Impala remix the whole thing.

The mono release is one of my favorite vinyls to throw on the turntable.

Who's Been Sleeping Here... sounds like the story of Goldilocks, as read by Keith Richards.

Did they play much of the Between the Buttons stuff live? A (quick) trawl through youtube didn't really turn up much. I did find some cool instrumental versions, like Yesterday's Papers.

Did they do any shows/tour/TV to promote this awesome album?

How does set list.FM reckon that list represents Between The Buttons? (Apart from Yesterday's Papers, that is)

Edit - It's the name of the tour, right? And we all thought that not playing much off the new album was a new phenomenon!

LSTNT and RT were on the US version, Green Lady. Still only three songs from it, though...

The U.K. version of Between the Buttons is a most underated album with the Jagger/Richard songwriting team exploring many varied avenues.

'Back Street Girl' is one of the most thoughful compositions fro Mick/Keith.
The lyrics are sad, reflective and sung to nostalgic accordion, acoustic guitar and tambarine.

'Yesterday's Papers' opens with a very simple drum and bass effect which is accelerated to a medium tempo and augmented by chimes and a vocal chorus.

'My Obsession' - Earthquake sounds with a stretched bass effect which sounds like a Tube train on the loose. Thrashing about in the background are Ian Stewart on a boogie-woogie piano, crisp drumming from Charlie Watts and Mick's vocal fighting for life in a barrage of effects.

'Connection' - Drums like they are inside the head, powerful bass rythms punctuated by guitar runs.

'She Smiled Sweetly' - Kind of sinister ethereal quality lent by a church organ

'Cool Calm & Collected' - Has almost everything including a honky tonk piano and a brilliant kazoo break by Keith.
The wind up sounds like someone switched the speed to 78rpm

'All Sold Out' - familiar 'Stones' mixture but good enough to excite with a traditional drum splatter from Charlie and a whining guitar.

'Please Go Home' Bo Diddley sound wirth shades of DR Who from the sound effects dept. Lots of echo, lots of beat, lots of dance appeal.

'Who's Been Sleeping Here' - Acoustic guitar & harmonica with clever lyrics.

'Complicated' - Sounds like a fairgroung organ with growling bass, smashing cymbils, maracas and a few jungle effects thrown in.

'Miss Amanda Jones' - Squeling guitar effects, driving rhythms and interesting lines squeeze thru the barrage of sounds.

'Something Happened To Me Yesterday' - starts off like something from a Looney Tunes cartoon and develops into a fantastic piece of entertainement.
Guitars supplemented by chortling clarinet, sleazy trombune and drunken euphonium.

Between the Buttons is smack in the middle of Wonderland and an album richer than ever before in terms of variation of pace, sound and excitement as the 'Stones' send the mind reeling and the limbs wheeling.

This was Jagger/Richards trying to find their songwriting niche by experimenting with various sounds/song structures.
I recall Mick saying just before its release in Jan.1967 that the band had recorded an album that was not really 'Stones' sounding but had been written ,played and recorded as a fun album away from the pressures of having to keep on coming up with hit singles.
Perhaps if the 'Stones' had not have followed on with Beggars Banquet,Let it Bleed,Sticky Fingers,EOMS one would be more appreciative of how good the songs on 'Between the Buttons' really are but to compare majestic work will only make other work sound inferior.
