James Brown - my worst Show i've ever seen :-(

Yesterday we where happy to join the godfahter of soul, MR. JAMES BROWN in Hamburg. It was the first time for me with Mr. Brown ; an the last. No encore, even of an fanstastic and excellent audience. Even when we all tried about 10 minutes to call him back on the stage. Wow. But - No Good Bye for the custumers - he just left the stage and didn't come back :-(((((
And the concert at all was like a cheap hotel-show in vegas. Sorry Mr. Brown!

But anyway, iam looking forward to the great Rolling-Stones. Waiting 10 hours to come in the stadiuim - running like "run-for-your-live" to stand in thefirst row - and then rock and roll.

I saw him in a college auditorium in Massachusetts in 1967. The band arrived an hour late, so to make it up to the audience he came on stage and played drums during the opening part of the show that did not include him. He had a lot less wear on body and soul at that time, and the show was phenominal. Now he probably doesn't have the energy to walk back for bows or an encore, or perhaps he forgot where the stage was. Gee, maybe that wasn't even him!

I wouldnt judge an act by whether they do an encore or not (theyre a pretty 'bogus' and predictable gimmick, when you think about it)

Elvis never did them, and very often the Stones havent either.

Yes, encores lose their luster when it's just part of the planned show. Should be spontaneous. When did the Stones not do an encore? They always have at the 12 shows I've been to. I remember reading about Neil Young in the eighties refusing to do an encore because of the crowd's behaviour at a show. Caused a disturbance but he could not be convinced. Seems to predictable nowadays. Are there big acts who do real encores anymore?

Good question. My memory is that they were rare or non-existent in 69/70 or 72/73. Not sure about 75, and I think they were rare in 78. Historians?

i think they were rare until 1981 u.s. tour; since then, "part of the show."

"And the concert at all was like a cheap hotel-show in vegas"

I love this description of classic Americana. I have seen several acts over the years, older performers whose act and bands have been, I'll say...reduced... to this.

This is what a western Canadian would characterize a Vegas type show as....

1) the main entertainer does not take the stage for two or three songs
2) one member of the band will have the duty of pumping the croud "#### will be out in just a minute"
3) when the performer does come out he postures for the croud a while, may play or sing two or three notes, just milks entrance.
3a) Star is wearing something totaly slick, shiny, unique.
4) the band consists of American stereo types, few of which look like say rock stars. The guitar player (three hundred pounds), sitting on stool, dressed in three piece suit with a white towel draped around his neck for the sweat of having to look that good under the lights. The guy with the Jersey accent, slicked back hair, playing harp and dressed like an east coast mobster. Or conversley they all dress alike yet you still have the three hundred pounder and the guy from Jersey in them, neither looks good in this case.
5) for R&B or soul bands throw in all of the classic Mowtown dance moves.
6) they make as big an exit as they did an entrance.

I just took in a Shemecia Copeland (daughter of Jonney Copeland) concert with such a band. The guitar player looked just like Bob Ubanks (Newlywed game) with white shoes, black pollester matching pant/shirt outfit....played a mean rock/R&B guitar but looked like a blackjack dealer (or game show host), he did the croud pumping. et.

Just had a nasty memory on topic....when I went to see CCR I had this image of the jack shirt (Canadian for plaid shirt), jeans with big buckle and the pageboy haircuts. The rest of the band looked like that but JF showed up in a hot pink or orange, matching pants, collarless tunic and cowboy hat, black frilly shirt with a cowboy bow tie....it was a classic example of CCR goes Vegas.

It is funny how one equates these types of presentation as cheap. I wonder what Celine's show will look like in a decade? Will someone drape a cape over her shoulders and escort a seemingly exausted Celine from the stage?

Mid 70's it was more common.

However there were a few shows in October 2002 (Atlanta and the Florida gigs I think) where after the b-stage they went straight back to the main stage and played one more song, so technically there was no encore.

I saw James twice in the 80s & it was not great - or James wasnt, the bands were very good. I love the man's recordings, including all those live albums (thru '71, not the later packages like the recent Apollo or the all-star NYC gig w/ Aretha etc) but when I saw him the audience had recently gone from almost all black (until the late 70s) to mostly college kids, & the cape routine & endless Please Please Pleases seemed passionless, pure shtick. He hasnt been in my neighborhood in some time, but I still get all those packages of pure genius, "Motherlode," "Funky Divas", "Funky People vols. 1 -3" the Texas & Paris live vault jobs etc, etc, & thats how I want to hear the genius of James...btw has anybody here ever see "Ski Party," a circa '65 low budget beach (er, ski lodge) movie, w/ James lip-synching (either 'Papa' or 'I Got You') & doing it to death in the fake snow???

I saw James about 9-10 years ago. I'm glad I did. He was old then but the show was a BLAST.

I saw the Stones in '75 and '78 and they didn't do an encore either time. I was surprised when they did one in '81.

they did more than one song on the main stage after the b-stage at turner field, left the main stage, and then came back w/MR and satisfaction as a double encore, a la the YCAGWYW and BS encore duo of B to B tour.

In response to Jackass's question about are there any acts that do real encores anymore, AC/DC played Ride On after the usual Those About To Rock closer in Europe on their Stiff Upper Lip tour. I believe it was at the stadium show in Paris. I don't think they've played that song since Brian has been the singer and I'm not sure if they played it very often when Bon Scott was still alive.

When did the Stones not do an encore?

=> 17.9.1965, Waldbuehne, Berlin

Rolling Stones only played 20 minutes, fans damaged the Waldbuehne (near Olympia Stadiom) and left the location as a ruin.
