Actually, the Jimi Hendrix Experience turned out to be a pretty cool band, especially notable for Mitch Mitchell's jazz-influenced interactions w/ Jimi (& Noel the anchor).

I could add one of my personal favourites, THE BLACK CROWES, but Led Zep & CCR are still the two frontrunners...

dandelion this is an outrage!! Whois running around usurping the name of the New York Dolls? Sylvain the traitor? Oh woe is me...
It took 30 posts for any one of us to remember the Velvet Underground.
I thought ofn a couple more: jane's addcition, psychedleic furs, Patti Smith's band could rock hard too. The MC5!

Like most great bands the Velvets have a great & distinctive drummer: Moe Tucker (like Charlie, Ringo, Moon, Bonham, Kenny Jones, Doug Clifford, Levon Helm, Ziggy Modeliste, Jerry Nolan, etc)

LA forum, the Winos are a downright supergroup IMO. keith took his sweet time assembling this band and he was right as usual. Steve Jordan IMO is surpassed only by Stewart Copeland in imagination within the 4 beat bar. The placement of the snare whack. Charlie Drayton is a near perfect ROCK bassist. Of course he does no tplay like Jaco or Stanley. He is a Rocker like Greg Ridley. Ivan comes from the whole neville heritage and knows what is what. When to slepp and when to play. I know you know this LA, that it's all about chemistry not about superstars. The reaspn a sportsteam becomaes great. Because it's not all about chiefs but also about good Indians.
That is sort of what I meant by the whole thread: a good Rock band. Where the whole is so much greater than the sum of the individual parts. Styles vary. Take a band like Yes e.g. There are five superb musicians, who ultimately can never get beyond just being FIVE MUSICIANS playing together. But the Stones, Faces, Clash play together and something happens. A new force is created. A power that was not there before is all of the sudden present. It is the force created by the band coming together. The VU IMO is of course a R & R Band. It's about spirit. They are rebels with electric guitars, they get high and play loud. They go "O yeah baby, give it to me..." The rest is all just extra window dresing.

Their aren't that many rock bands that do roll, one that does spring to mind, who still play together now and then are The Pretty Things.........they never got the acclaim that they deserved. I think they sounded more like the stones than even the stones on some of their early stuff.
